Can "Messages" Be Safely Deleted From The Game's Folders?

When I first start my OOTP12 league, it takes forever for the "Messages" to load, about 50 seconds. My league has 64 teams and is in its 36th season.

I never read any messages in my solo league. I let the AI control all teams.

Are these "Messages" vital to the game's operation?
Does the game ever delete them? Or is it up to me to delete them?

Can they be safely deleted?

If so, where are they stored. I have looked in the game's folder and did not see anything labeled as "Messages".

Your help and advice would be much appreciated.

I would say archive the folder that they are in, then delete them and try running the game. I would assume that in a few game weeks, you will have them again but I'm not sure

In game, in the manager news & mail tab, there is an option that reads "delete all messages", in the bottom of the screen. That should do it, I suppose.

Eugene, yes they can be deleted safely. I do it every year. You do have to do it twice though. See these instructions.

First back up your league. Maybe even two backups!

Second, exit the game.

Third, delete all the messages in the "your league.lg\messages" folder.

Fourth, delete the messages.dat file in "your league.lg" folder. You must do this because the next time you open the game it will regenerate all of the deleted messages.

Fifth, open the game and your league. As the game boots the messages.dat file will be rebuilt. All messages will be gone.

For anyone else who is interested you can delete box score, game log replays and messages from any league via a batch file. See below.

Quote:
del .\news\txt\leagues\log_*.txt
del .\news\html\box_scores\*.html
del .\news\html\game_logs\*.html
del .\replays\*.rpl
del .\messages\message*.txt
Take the text above, copy and paste into a text editor. Save as boxlogdelete.bat in "your league.lg" folder (where all the dat files are). The extension must be .bat for it to work. Double click on it and it will do the job.

Use at your own risk and back up your league file before doing anything.

Thanks for the help.

I have already done this.

Apparently the game is storing all the messages for each season, thus the reason for the slow loading.

I'll back up twice like you say, so there shouldn't be any problem if it goes awry.

I'll let you know if it works.

Thanks again.

Just an FYI for future use:

Files That Are SafeTo Delete To Improve Game Performance

Quote:
messages - delete entire contents of this folder; NOTE: ALSO DELETEMESSAGE.DAT.
news/html - delete contents of all folders except images; do not delete thestyles.css file.
news/txt - delete contents of leagues* and teams** folders; do not deleteanything from players folder.

* Definitely delete the log.txt files generated from game logs. The other filesare not large or numerous, so consider leaving them alone.
** You can find, isolate, and save the team numbered files that correspond tothe team whose news is to be kept, if any.

This is what I do at the beginning of each pre-season.
