League with no teams?

Can I run a league with no schedule, no teams or if I have to have teams empty rosters for a few seasons? Or will that break the game?

Basically I want to start in 1871 with one league of 12. Relegate 4 and in 1872 have two leagues of 8. Eventually expand to a third and fourth league also.

The problem is, adding leagues at a later date, causes the game to import a ton of fictional players and there is no way to mass delete only those players, without manually going through and determining who the fake and real guys are.

So my idea would be to add the three lower level fictional leagues at the start. Delete all of their players. Then add the fourth historical league which will be my major league.

Any other ideas for how to do this if what I'm thinking of (empty leagues for a few years) won't work?

?
I hate to point out the obvious but, if you have no teams, no players and no schedule, you don't have a league. Just start in 1871 and pretend like you ran the 1870 season which doesn't exist in ootp

ask elfsutton he runs leagues where he adds and subtracts teams all the time. He can probably help you figure out how to accomplish your goal!

The problem is that there aren't enough players to support four leagues in 1871. So I would only want to add leagues as enough players become available to support those teams.

If the game had an option to not create the fictional players when the fictional league is created, then I'd be fine. I could just create the new league in say 1876, then join it through an association with the existing league and be fine. The problem is those fictional players that are created, and not being able to easily delete *only* those players after it's created.

Or maybe there is an easy way to delete those guys that I am missing?

Couldn't you just add those leagues as templates?

If you want to add leagues and have only real players, you may be a while in waiting. I have not been able to run more than 2 leagues with historical players only and I have a current dynasty that started in 1871 and is not in the middle of 1882, the NL has real players imported each year and the other three leagues (will be 7 when I get done adding league) get ficitional players.

If you sim till about 1900 or so, you might have enough only real players to support 2 maybe 3 leagues but that would be the limit until in the 50s or so. Just just dont get enough players that way.

If you create the league and do not want the fictionals, you add the league, sim one day to allow the ammy draft to run and then under League Menu at the top, you select all 'league' name players and select them all and delete. You will then need to delete the empty teams and you can add whatever teams you want.

Thanks for the advice on deleting, that could work. If those players stay within the fictional league and they are the only ones that show up on that league's draft list, I could probably just delete them directly from the draft pool, right?

Why are there so few players? Using Spritze/Gambo, I get 241 players in 1871 and I assume a bunch more will follow each year. Only need 15-16 man rosters through 1881, could do 17 for 1882-1883 and get away with 21-22 until 1894 probably.

Heck until 1907, major league teams only had 26 total players play for them on average at the most in any season.

This would be assuming you keep the schedules somewhat in line, but in the 1800s, when the schedules were roughly 60 games long, teams only used 2-4 pitchers all year; in the low 80s they used 4-5, they used 6-7 when the schedules were in the 94-111 range, and in the 130s they used about 8-9.

From 1893-1906, when schedules ranged from 131-156 games on average, teams used 9-10 pitchers total each year.

You never 'need' more than 12-13 or so position players, heck, even today that's true.

You might have some bench players getting more time when there's an injury, but with 241 players in 1871 I assume I could start off with two 8-team leagues right away, with each team having 2-3 pitchers.

I would think the controlling roster size issue would be the number of available pitchers more than anything else, right?

Maybe I'm missing something within the game mechanic that makes doing this impossible?
