How do you play?

Hey guys... Brand new to OOTP and was just curious how everyone plays the game... Manage? Coach? Do you "play" every game or just quick sim?

Just was curious on how everyone plays and what your routines are. The game has SOOOOO much to it and still getting a feel for it. It can be pretty overwhelming so looking for some advice / tips / tricks or any kind info to help a new guy out! Want to make the most of it and have a great experience. I've made it through 4 games so far and watching/playing all 162 may take quite some time!

Just kind of a random advice thread. Thanks in advance from everyone who contributes to this post!! Hope to hear from some of you seasoned OOTP vets!

I like the GM aspect of the game. I sim out day by day and check box scores, but my task is to make roster moves, and manage both the money and the farm.

To copy/paste my response from a thread where a similar topic came up:

When I first started OOTP, I played out every game. I felt like it took too long, so I started simming more often (I'd only play maybe 1 or 2 games a week). Gradually, this turned into total simulation, acting as simply the GM and letting the AI manage all the on-field matters. While I still like this approach, for the speed at which you can get through a season, I have to say that playing out the games is better by far.

I recently switched back to playing out every game, and my god, I had forgotten what it was like to feel a true connection with your players. All those seasons I had simmed, trading a whole bunch in the offseason, giving up fan favorites in the name of making the team better, taking a "what have you done for me lately" attitude when re-signing guys... I used to THINK that I was connected to my players, but I never realized how removed from the team I actually was.

Previously, roster moves were nothing to me. I made deals left and right. The league was full of guys who played on my team for a year and then got traded. I felt no loyalty to them, and because of that, I was always able to improve the team and took so many different franchises to so many championships that, as I pointed out above, I would get bored with the league (The thread was initially on how long it takes to get bored with a league). Now, I'm sitting at just over .500 for the third straight season, but I wouldn't give up this core of guys for the world. I try to make a deadline deal for that SP we so desperately need, and I look at the list of guys I could trade... and I don't want to trade them. They're no longer just numbers in a chart; I know these guys. Sure, they're not REAL, but I still feel like I'm connected with them. I believe in them, and I know that when I finally do win a championship with them, it's going to be so much more special because of it.

That's how I feel, anyway. But the important thing to remember is that you can play OOTP however you want. Whatever works best for you.

Thanks for both of your responses! I just am feeling overwhelmed! I need to get a rhythm and pattern down. This game is so deep I love it! I just think it may take a very long time to make it through a season so was curious on how the majority of OOTP players play!

Right now I'm playing the MLB Quickstart with the Cubs. I'm only in 2013. Dioner Navarro is second in batting avg in the NL, Marmol and Valverde are my setup and closer; and this game must be broken because I've no business being in top of the division after the All-Star break. I started that save in July, and I'm about 100 games into the season. I play maybe 1-4 games--usually a series--throughout the day. Playing out every game in a 162 games a season might seem a bit much on paper, but I find it more engrossing.

But like Fyrestorm3 mentioned, there are different ways you can play. Maybe if you find playing out every game too slow, just try simming weekly. Maybe relegate some options to the AI. You can make things easier at first--trade options and all that--as you find your own routine.

I have read of people playing OOTP in manners that I would never even have dreamed of, and the way I play it appeals to few. That's the beauty of the game: you can play it a thousand different ways. But finding the way that you like best? No one can tell you what this is. You have to try different ways until you find it.

According to OOTP itself, OOTP MLB play (modern and historical) outnumbers OOTP fictional play three to one.

Five thousand thanks for a non-modder? I never thought I'd see the day. Thank you for your support.

I typically sim all of the games day by day. I'll manage one game about every two weeks to switch it up. I feel it gives a good balance between "connecting" with the players and progressing the season at a good clip. I'll manage all playoff games though.

I sim day by day as strictly GM. I "ask manager" to set rotation and lineups. I just won my 4th league title in the last 5 years. I have a fictional game going. I have also won my division 6 of the last 7 years.

Debating if I want to keep as GM of this team or move onto a new team.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

I wanted to play as a sub-par team and try to build them into a champion so I chose the New York Mets. I've played all the games so far and I'm 3-3. I'll probably end up simming some as well. I let the AI handle all minor league stuff. I just manage the nets. I think I'm going to hold an expansion draft in the future! I also think I may relocate the Mets... In another thread someone had mentioned league evolution in regards to relocating but I could not find any threads on this. If anyone wants to share how that works with me that would be great

I just went to Citi Field for the first time in June to see the Cardinals. Don't relocate. Great venue!

Well then maybe a logo/team rebrand is in order! Because I cannot stand their logo!

If someone can still let me know on the whole relocation/evolution process that'd be great. I'd like to relocate a team or two throughout my MLB league in the future

Personally, I am a huge proponent of creating completely fictional leagues. I feel that playing with the real players and teams give me certain expectations, and I just expect the game to turn out like real life. By playing with fictional teams and players, I actually have to pay attention to what is going on in my league, and make up my own back stories about players, etc.

When it comes to my actual style of play, I do a mixture of playing out games in. I always play out games in the playoffs, and often at the beginning of the season, but it's definitely too slow for me to send everything all season long. I also know some people who will play the last three innings of every game. OOTP gives you great options were just jumping right to the seventh inning.

For me it depends on the season, standings and team. I tend to play more if the race is close. Alot also depends on what type of team I have. Lately I prefer to sim since my main league is more fun adding my fictional historical players then actually playing for a bad team. For leagues like my History leagues, I sim the regular season but play the playoffs. I also play my Top 25 league through 3 seasons.

The majority of OOTP players play the game differently.

For me, I play exclusively online leagues (okay, just the PEBA, actually) where the competition is against other humans. We sim 7 days at a time, twice a week, which is a moderately slow pace. You have time to review player performance in detail. The PEBA is a writing league, meaning that article writing is a large component of the world we create. Write a decent length article about a player and you connect with them at a deeper level even then just analyzing their play can give you. This really adds connection to players you wouldn't get any other way. The pace is fast enough that you feel like you can have an impact on your team, but slow enough that when you break through with a contender after a rebuild you feel like you've really worked to get there. PEBA is a top rate online league and we'll be converting to OOTP14 in short order, so if anyone is interested, check us out at the link in my sig.

I've previously been in leagues that simmed 15 days at a time, 4 or 5 days a week, which meant that seasons went by really quickly. In those leagues, you tend to focus more on building the team at a macro level, and you have to be quick on the trigger with trades, but you also don't spend a ton of time feeling stuck in your current situation. I'm liking the slower pace now that I'm in that world.

To me, online play is the only way I've been able to stay engaged. The connection with others and the challenge of trying to convince a human to part with their talent is very different from just trying to outsmart the AI.

I tend to play like I learned in online leagues. I sim about a week at a time.
I do not stop the sim when a player comes off the DL. If a player is injured for more than 2 weeks I stop the sim.
Solo I let the AI handle lineups in Majors and Minors.
I run through my messages at the end of each sim. Pull a player off the Dl or throw one on.
I check the leader boards about once a month.
The draft and free agency are my favorite parts of the season. I take that back, the playoffs are better. If we make it.
I do not make trades I think are bad for the AI teams.

I am usually exhausted when I sit down to play and need to unwind from life, I prefer a pretty passive experience.

Online I am a co-commissioner in the league I am in. Run sims 1-3 times a week. That is a much more interactive experiece, I am far more invested than in a solo league.

Good luck,
Tom

I've been opening each game and simming a half inning at a time. This allows me to control the way that my pitchers are used without micromanaging every AB.

If I'm on the fence about letting a pitcher hit/bunt or making a change, I'll play that inning out. I'll also jump in and play out innings where I need a run to tie or win a game.

I like the balance that this gives me between speed of games and getting to know my players.

Playoffs...I play out every AB.

I play fictional leagues and usually manage a small market team. I'm GM and manager at the ML level and leave the minors to the AI. I sim weeks and months at a time. I get a lot of seasons in.

I like small fictional leagues. In my current league, I started with eight teams divided between two subleagues with no interleague play. I've since expanded it to twelve teams. You really get to know the players in your league that way, as you're constantly playing against them. The players who become journeymen will have played for nearly every team in the league by the time they retire.

I play parts of every game. I usually sim to the fifth or sixth inning, and then take over in order to handle pitching changes, pinch runners, etc. Depending on how much time I spend playing, it doesn't take me that long to go through a 162-game schedule.

I micromanage my major league roster, setting the lineups and pitching staff. For my minor league teams, I set the rosters and then ask the AI to fill out the lineups and pitching staff. I'll make changes to those lineups if I want a particular player used in a certain way, or I disagree with the AI's decisions.

Edited to add: I also play in Commissioner Mode so that I can't be fired. I want to make sure I go out on my terms.
