Newb (but oldtimer) questions

This might not be the correct forum to post this in, but I figured the general discussion would be the best place for people to see and respond.

I am a newbie to the new versions of OOTP. However, I had the first 4-5 versions of the game, and to this day, it is still my favorite game of all time. Am a numbers guy who loves sims and history and OOTP offered all that despite (at the time) basically be a text game with alot of repeatitve story lines and very basic graphics. Life got in the way though and I haven't played (or purchased new versions) in a number of years. But I have some free time now, and want to get back to into it. I know version 15 is the new one, but with the way I play, 14 would be fine so going to start there and if I still love the game as much as I used to, move on to 15 or wait until 16 comes outs.

The beauty of OOTP (always played solo leagues) was that you could pick up and play from where you left off at any time, even after a week or 2 off, and it would still be as fun. Plus with the ability to download it to your laptop (or tablet) can take the game anywhere with you and play. And with so many options of playing historical, fictional or current rosters, the game possibilities are endless.

Anyway, on to my questions...

When I used to play, the thing I would also do was a "history of baseball" league. Would pick a very early year in baseball history (usually between 1901 and 1920) and start from there. Manage a team until I won a world series with them, then move on to another team. Back when I used to play, there was a 3rd party data dump which you needed to download and pick the season you wanted to start. You could pick to have the players imported to their real teams or have a draft. And pick if their ratins were based on rookie year, career stats, career left, etc. And the worst part, was you would manually have to edit the league to create expansion teams and new leagues/divisions, etc. At times it was tedious but it was part of the history.

With the new games, it seems from reading the reviews and game descriptions that historical leagues are an option available when you start up a career. Does this mean that the game now does everything for you? It will import the players. It will create expansion teams. It will create new divisions and add wildcard to the playoffs, etc. Or does all of that still manually need to be done?

Also, it seems like the game now has the option of way more minor leagues (it used to just be 1 team at AAA, AA, A), and also international leagues and players. Are all of these fully selectable when you start with a historical league? I don't want a player from Japan coming into the league in 1910 and being the most dominate player.

Sorry for the long winded post. I checked the forums and the stickys don't really seem to descibe any of this. If there is a place I can get all this info, a link would be great.

Thanks in advance, Mike

Since the release of OOTP15, the OOTP14 forums are kind of dead since almost all the veterans have moved on :/.

That said, I think you are right about how historical leagues work. I've only dipped as far back as 1984, which isn't all that much different as far as rules work, but it has played out as I would expect without my having to do anything outside the game.
