Extension Money

So here's the situation.

In an online league I trade for a player with a huge contract for depth (I know silly me). It's 2 years with a player option. I forget that the contract will count against my "Free Agent Money" and "Extensions Money". So I have barely 1M in extensions left for people I want to sign this year.

The problem is that my #2 SP is out for 3-4 months now. My #1 has a diagnosis pending. I'm looking to trade for a SP...but now my hands are tied.
A couple of questions:

1. Does trading my player with the huge contract 'give my extension money back'? So that extension money I lost with acquiring him, will be given back to me?

2. 1 SP I'm looking at has a buyout for the 2nd year and is not arbitration eligible. If I (and I will) use the buyout does that also 'give the extension money back to me'? Hopefully I'm being clear when it comes to this.

2b. How quickly can you use a buyout? Does it have to be in the off season before that option year? Or can it be in the middle of the year...1 year before the last year on his contract.

3. If I just release the potential pitcher in the offseason will there be money to sign my other players to extensions?

4. If the player with the player option uses the option, what happens with the extension money then.

5. Basically I'm asking if there is any way I can get myself out of this hole

Thanks and hopefully I make sense right now.

YES

I assume by 2nd year you mean the season after current. This is not as clear as if relates to how much cash you have on hand and how much profit/loss you will generate in the current year. In essence it is the same as releasing a player under contract. You are obligated for the remaining amount of the contract, which in this case is the buyout amount.

2b. How quickly can you use a buyout? Does it have to be in the off season before that option year? Or can it be in the middle of the year...1 year before the last year on his contract.

You can do anytime. you will owe the remainder of the contract with the buyout amount being the last year value instead of the last year salary.

Who is the "potential pitcher"?

Once the off-season starts your finances change. What is seen as the extension values now (e.g. projected budget and salaries) will change. You will have a new budget and a new projected budget. Unfortunately the salary view will not change until 1 Jan. so you will have to manually figure out what extension money you will see in Jan. The game however, will continue to function off what is on the screen (e.g. new projected budget, old salary). I would need to see the league details to make any estimate here.

4. If the player with the player option uses the option, what happens with the extension money then.

At this point in time, the game is assuming the player will exercise the option (whether it is player or team). As stated above, your extension picture changes after the end of the season so what you are seeing now wont be the case after the player exercises the option.

5. Basically I'm asking if there is any way I can get myself out of this hole

Probably not, but a detailed look is needed to be sure. The sequence of events works against you. Don't know where in the current season you are, but I will assume pre-trade deadline, since trading a player was an option. You have until the end of the season to improve your profit and/or get some cash. Those will impact your extension $ this year. Once the season rolls over you will be looking at a new budget and a new projected budget as well as options being executed. The AI calculations are looking at this new budget against existing salary (e.g. coming season in stead of the following year). This will change 1 Jan. You are unable to adjust other expenses until "pre-season" which is usually in Feb. That is the next opportunity to influence available extension money.

Thanks and hopefully I make sense right now.
