Lightbulb OOTP 15 Update #3 coming at the end of the week....

Hey folks,

despite us wanting to take some time off, we have been working on another patch It will be released Friday if everything works well and include plenty of bug fixes, including the issue that caused 3D to crash on Mac with sound enabled.

OK, that's the good news. However, there is other news too. MLB has asked us to remove the real team nicknames from the game. And since we are good citizens we agreed, so games created with the new patch will replace the real team nicknames with fictional ones. Of course, this does not apply to already existing saved games.

For 2015 we plan to negotiate a proper MLB licensing for both OOTP 16 and iOOTP 2015, so in the future this no longer will be an issue.

Alright, that's it for now. Back to coding the game!

Cheers,
Markus

MLB... They do realize that every single user of this game is going to just rename the teams to their real MLB nicknames, right? They did this same thing on iTunes. Every podcast that contained an MLB team nickname or logo was removed from the Apple Store. Unbelievable.

Aside from that, thank you Devs for your never-ending hard work. The best game in the world continues to get better.

The MLB is just protecting their trademarks, nothing wrong with that.

The good news in Markus' post is that if they do get the MLB licensing, we should see actual team names and logos in the game.

Thanks for the news Markus, it sucks about having to remove the logos and trademarks but we're all going to replace them anyways after we download the patch so it's really not that big of a deal I guess. Good luck with the licensing agreement for next years game!! :-)

Proper licenses would conceivably mean that the game could ship with name AND logos and you'd be able to have a MLB quickstart that would be ready to go from the moment you download. In the end, I think this should work out pretty well for OOTP customers who want to play modern baseball.

Nicknames only. There are no MLB logos included with the game.

MLB is the worst. It's like they actively try and get people to not care about their product.

I guess this means OOTP has gotten too big to fly under their radar anymore. Congrats, Markus!

Ridiculous that the MLB wants you to o that. I thought the lawsuit said that only the team logos were protected. Not the names. Disappointing

I don't know if MLB would actually win a lawsuit there, but their current terms of use state that names and nicknames of the teams are trademarks. Again, I don't know if they could win a lawsuit since I have no knowledge about the legal matters. But why risk a lawsuit? Actually Markus can be flattered that OOTP is already big enough to draw the attention of such a greedy organization.

Nah, MLB would rather you pay money for products (Major League Baseball 2KSuck, MLB The Show, RBI Baseball) inferior to this one they are already licensing. Can't leave any penny unclaimed.

It is a shame you can not use the names anymore, it is a good thing that you have gotten big enough to warrant a response and I know they are protecting their names, but who is the say that a name is trademarked if after a city. It is not like you are selling the game with logos. But to a degree, I understand and in a way congratz!

MLB risks losing all trademark protections of their names and logos if they know of, and don't address unlicensed usage. They can't let their trademarks "become a part of the public domain." Maybe it sucks, but it's how the law works.

It really is just a sign that OOTP is now too large to escape notice.

Do team names really mean that much that folks want to pay the extra it's going to cost to license the game? I would rather see more invested in the AI. It would really bother me to be paying another $5-$10 just to have team names I can take a minute to edit myself.

Agreed and would Marcus have access to their database of historical logos? Would the licence be worth it if you did not have access to the 1980s White Sox logo or the Kansas City A's logos?

Most of the old timers around here know how to import and change stuff around, but if it does put a bigger price tag on the game, it may be harmful.

Hopefully, paying for the license will also mean that MLB will promote OOTP. In that case, the ROI would be worth paying the fee.

Let MLB sue you, Markus. It would be bad publicity for them for going after a small company and great publicity for OOTP. Your sales might just skyrocket!
