STEAM Questions from a Total STEAM Newbie!

I pre-ordered OOTP 16 and notice it comes with two licenses and and a STEAM key. I recently bought a new computer that came with a free STEAM game. I signed up for a STEAM account, selected and downloaded my free game (have never played it yet). My questions are:

Do I simply log in to my STEAM account, and with the new key for OOTP 16, download the game to my new computer?

Do you have to be connected to the internet in order to play STEAM games?

Will I still be able will to install the game on two other computers?

I have three computers total (two laptops and one desktop) and it would be awesome to have a copy of OOTP 16 on all three.

Using Ootp 15 for example I was emailed my key and you go to top left hand menu of steam client when running and go to Games>Activate a product on steam and paste the code into the box and then steam will download the game.

You cant use Steam on other computers at the same time i.e. you can install steam on numerous computers but cant be signed in the same time. So i believe you could install ootp on other machines with steam as long as they can connect to internet for setup of the game.

This is from Steams Help about offline mode as far as I know you have to be online when you first install the game to activate it on the computer you are using.

Quote:
What is Offline Mode?

Offline Mode allows you to play games through Steam without reconnecting to the Steam Network every time you wish to play - this is particularly useful if you do not plan on playing over the internet and would prefer not to download new updates for your single-player games.

Please note that you must connect to the Steam Network and test each of the games you would like to use in Offline Mode at least once to set up your account and configure Offline Mode on your machine.
I hope this helps.

Thanks, Robroy. That covered it.

Mike, LMK if you have any other questions.

That helps immensely. Internet connection for my new laptop won't be an issue 90% of the time.

You can have as many Steam installations of OOTP as you like, but you can only run one of them at any one time.

According to OOTP itself, OOTP MLB play (modern and historical) outnumbers OOTP fictional play three to one.

Five thousand thanks for a non-modder? I never thought I'd see the day. Thank you for your support.

This will probably sound like a dumb question but I have no experience with Steam.

Can someone tell me what benefits steams ootp? Does this allow you to play against people without going through the hassle of setting up files on your own server?

No, online leagues in OOTP are still done by sending in files to your league commissioner over FTP.

The main advantage to OOTP being on Steam is that Steam is a fantastic marketing and sales portal that gets OOTP seen by more people.
And it is convenient in that you don't need to keep up with the install file or license key. Steam keeps all your games tied to your account so you can install them when you want or if you have a new computer or multiple computers you just have to install the Steam software.

Hopefully in the future Markus will allow OOTP to make use of Steam cloud and Steam workshop. The cloud would allow internet access of save files which would make playing the same league over multiple computers much easier.
Steam workshop would allow mod files to be directly uploaded to Steam which would centralize the mod process and maybe get some people making mods who are not connected to this forum.

Another benefit of Steam is automatic patching, although the patches will probably lag behind the direct download version.

Just to clarify your very helpful post, this is no longer the case. You can be logged into Steam on multiple machines at the same time (I regularly do so to home stream), however it is true that one account = one game at a time, regardless of concurrent Steam instances.

My question is, prob a stupid question but i will be preordering it tomorrow morning when i get home from work after i get paid after midnight tonight.

My question is, after i license it on friday and after the steam becomes avail on monday do i have to unlicense it to then license it with the stream key as i like how if its through steam i press the print screen button through steam and it puts it in a directory for me it will make it easier for my story and posting pictures instead of going through paint and doing it that way without steam..

No. The two keys are (should be anyway) two separate entities since they are provided by two separate companies.

Note to self: Princess Kenny was really off-putting.
