What Gives with Fan Interest?

I traded a guy who was exceptionally popular for a guy who's also exceptionally popular. The fan interest crashed about 7 points because the fans were upset I traded the exc. pop. player. That's ok but in previous releases I'd get the fan interest back because the guy I traded for is also exc. popular. Didn't happen this time...the fan interest stayed down. Has something changed in version 17? If you trade one popular player for another shouldn't the fan interest lost equal the fan interest gained?

You talking national or local popularity? And, are you talking about the same variety for both players?

They were both extremely popular locally and very high overall (I can't quite remember exact wording but they were identical there too).

I'm wondering if I ought to use the editor to add some more fan interest but I only want to do that if what happened is perceived as a bug in the program.

Hmmm. Maybe they changed this to be more "local" in that location A's local popularity will not necessarily instantaneously translate to local popularity in location B. This would make sense.

Good answer. That would make sense though I didn't see that listed as a changed feature.

Ever get any more info on this? I had the same situation happen to me in my online league. I even signed an over the hill "extremely popular" player and my fan interest didn't move one bit, nor did I get an email.

Nope. Still having a problem with fan interest failing to increase even when popular players are signed or traded for.

Yes, but I thought we had "resolved" it (in our minds) that it may be primarily a local popularity kind of thing in that the new player who was locally popular someplace else does not immediately replace in fans' hearts the locally popular player who just left.

Of course, it's always a good thing to have Markus or Matt comment to either debunk a theory or "make it official."

Does a drop (or increase) in fan interest of a few points make a difference to any other aspect of the game?
I see attendance at home games with a loose correlation to my teams W-L performance, even when popularity is flat.
Even a slight drop in attendance, possibly caused by a slight drop in popularity, only translates into a handful of ticket sales.

That's a good point. When the game says "Fan interest crashed!" or whatever the wording, it still is not that much in absolute numbers. And, even when it does "crash," I don't see much change in attendance or marketing revenue, either. I think the fan interest bar has to move down significantly before any significant negative effects are seen. That would take several bad moves, I think.

I dunno, guys. It really would be good if Matt or Markus chimed in on this. I still don't know why signing a popular player in a trade doesn't boost popularity.

Sucks when this off season I dealt away an extremely popular one for a "very popular" one. Fan interest crashed with the departure. Unaffected by the new arrival.

But again, did it have any demonstrable affect on your team's financial performance?

Otherwise, it's merely cosmetic and not anything to worry about.

It's directly tied to number of season tickets sold . Those have not gone on sale yet but I can report back soon

Still can't tell if this is a bug that has been in the game since day 1 or if it's supposed to be because of that local popularity thing.

I believe it's an OOTP 17 bug from release. Prior to that, all the OOTP releases would decrease/increase the fan interest if the trades involving popular players going and coming went through.

That's what I was thinking. It was too easy to increase fan interest in 16 though, which is why they might have decided to change it.

Fan Interest

This really needs to be fixed. I have never received a fan interest increase, even with getting the best players in my leagues. I now have had 1 in fan interest in 5 straight seasons and have to trade my best players because I can't get anyone to come to the games even though I win over 105 games a year. Any time I build it up, it goes back down because I have to trade my best players or lose them to Free Agency. It's really annoying.
