Why would the AI release this player?

Whenever I see something odd.. I like to post about it to see if there is something rational I'm missing.

Al Alburquerque was an absolute stud for us for the previous two seasons, leading the AL in saves both seasons. He wanted too much money to resign (for good reason) and we had a young hard throwing setup pitcher who we figured would fill the closer role just fine.

He sits forever in FA that off season and the LA Dodgers signed him to a modest 1 year deal for $4,240,000. He's pitched well for the Dodgers, but on July 22nd they released him. The Dodgers are 10 games out of first, but only 5 games out of a Wild Card with 59 games left.

I just can't think of a reason why they would just release him?

What am I missing here? He's also Very Popular..

His K rate fell off the table maybe is the reason?

age 39 plus. I would have dumped him too by that time but then I would NOT have gotten him in the first place. I am surprised he did so well for you. He never does all that good for me and I usually trade him within 60 days

He was a BEAST for me in 2023, AL reliever of the year and 2nd in Cy Young voting.

I don't really look at age when you see his stats.. stats always trumps age. Like you said.. why sign him - he's pitched well so at least let him help you to a playoff birth and don't sign him in the off season. He's still 4* and one of the best options you had coming out of the pen.

Doesn't make sense. Happens some times as we all know. In my mlb league, I usually chalk it up to personal issues that happen in real life.

Would need to see more from the rest of their bullpen, but they really only have 2 guys slumping in the bullpen (not counting their only lefty in Shreve). But essentially if they feel that Bradley is a better player than Albuquerque, and he won't accept the minors demotion, he's either gotta be released or traded. Probably in this case they likely should have shopped him around first and maybe gotten something for him, but if you like the other guys better, there's not much really to do.

stats are getting worse for him and I still would dump the guy even based on stats alone. I am very picky and I find your guy oddly lasting as long as he did. I always try to dump players by age 34 for it seems when players hit that age they start taking a massive dump in production.

Thanks.. I just like to discuss these things. Why dump a guy and have to pay him anyway when you can still use a guy with these numbers and ratings? I can see them dumping him in the off season.

Another question is.. with his previous two seasons, why would it take so long for a team to sign him in the first place?

I may have to revisit my evaluation settings. I use 50/30/15/5.

No matter his age, he led the league in saves the past two seasons and had a pretty great ERA.

Dodgers should have at least keep them in their pen for this season as they try to make a playoff push. I can't see the logic in releasing him.

Good work ethic, well respected by his teammates and very popular. What is LA thinking?

Anyway.. I'll post his SR tonight along with the LAD relief staff. I'll also see who they pulled up to take his place.

SP Julio Urias returned from rehab assignment so they put Al on waivers and DFA him. Look at the screenshots below... appears to just be an AI blunder to me. They have other older players they could have waived.

Based on my World Series record (0 in OOTP17 in 10+ season), I make blunders all the time too.

I wasn't being completely facetious though.... I did mean to imply that some amount of unpredictable behavior by AI GMs is actually preferred in the game from my perspective, as long as it doesn't give the human player a consistent advantage.

It's possible the AI's scouts thought he had declined way further than yours. It's possible the AI GM weights ratings even heavier than stats (irregardless of your game settings).

Does Morale reset when the player is released? He wants to be the closer and he obviously wasn't closing, so maybe he was really angry and they would rather get rid of him than the guy that's closing.

It doesn't seem THAT off the wall to me. A bit odd, yes, but it can be justified, albeit not fully convincingly.

I notice that it's usually pretty easy to trade for good, but expensive and older relievers, even at the highest difficulty. So Albuquerque was probably undervalued compared to the other relievers. Also, perhaps Bradley and the other relievers were out of options, and the AI didn't want to risk losing them on waivers? I've actually done similar things (releasing 3+ star relievers

The move is a bit strange, but not really an issue IMO. Besides, in the game and also in real life, it's very difficult to find relievers who are consistently very good across seasons.

He was signed by another team... so at least someone still values him.

I'm at work and don't remember which team signed him.. but he didn't last long in FA.

They need to improve the AI evaul settings for 18. I would like to see it fluctuate as the season goes on - it shouldn't be static.

Seems odd to see him released at the stage of the season it was at.

Any possibility of conflict conflict with manager?

I have seen on occasion where a free agent will not re-sign because of the manager.
