Question OOTP 18 Discussion: Head-to-Head / Online Gaming

Okay, I do not want to get your hopes up too much, but we are currently looking into the idea of getting some sort of mode into the game which lets you play games head-to-head against other human opponents.

Now, there are obviously an infinite number of ways how such a mode could look like, so let me throw some brainstorming at you...

Challenge a friend for an head-to-head exhibition game with your team from your solo league.
Positive: Easy to set up, quick action
Negative: No real reward, cheating is easily possible by editing players

Play head-to-head games in an online league
Positive: Good immersion, games mean something
Negative: Only the first game for a sim period (i.e. 7 days) would be playable, so commishes would have to sim & post league files day-by-day if users want to play out every game. Timing issue (in real life I even have problems meeting friends for a coffee, how likely is it that users in online leagues find the right time to meet and play?)

Something like FIFA's Ultimate Team or MLB The Show's Diamond Dynasty mode
Positive: Great immersion, a new play mode (collect player cards and set up your team with them, card packs can be purchased or unlocked via achievements), no cheating easily possible, can challenge & play against strangers or friends via matchmaking, user teams can take part in automated league play
Negative: Lots of development work, success depends on number of users playing this mode

OK, which one would you use? Do you have a different idea for an online / head-to-head / e-sports mode in OOTP?

Cheers,
Markus

I like the idea of head to head online. Would be great to play out the playoffs with my friends!

I have absolutely zero interest in any type of head-to-head play. Those features would not appeal to me at all.

No interest at all in any form.

#2 seems to be the only one I would have any interest in (but I am VERY interested in that).

It would also seem to me that the biggest hindrance to playing a league out like this would be the time it takes to upload (especially) and download new files between every game. Would it be possible to cut the time down by not uploading and downloading everything on a daily basis and only include the essential things needed to play the next game? Then you could upload everything once a week or so or whatever the sim period is set at.

Another idea maybe for online leagues, would be that instead of playing games out on the computers of the home and visitors, the games are played out on the computer of the commissioner with the home and visitor machines only acting as terminals. Then no uploading or downloading would be needed at all between games.

Well, I love FIFA and Madden Ultimate Team so I would vote for that. I would love to see something like that with OOTP. Though it seems like that would really need a lot of resources to both setup and maintain, so that seems a little advanced. Also I'm guessing the Ultimate Team crowd probably doesn't super overlap with the non-arcade sim crowd. But maybe I'm wrong.

I don't think I would be interested since I run my real-time season on my own, but exhibition games against another player choosing any team from history could be interesting.
In order to stop cheating, the teams need to be chosen right at the start of the game.

I am not interested in any of the three at the moment. Once I finish my masters next summer, I'd like to join an online league, so #2 would appeal to me. And I can see the benefit of #1 and possibly being interested if it takes off and people on these boards post looking for games.

#3 is of zero interest to me and it's implementation would concern me as it's not the direction I prefer to see OOTP head. But if the interest is high, I can't fault the company for going in that direction.

I really have no interest in any of these. I am more interested in things which will enhance the GM experience by making it deeper, more detailed and more realistic.

Scouting is something that could use some work IMO. Also staff, and the morale system could use work I think.

Top Draft eligible player draft lists top(250)....also updated prospect lists at mid-season...top 30 prospect lists for each organization.

One thing that I could mention...
Strat-o-Matic has a Baseball Daily feature that downloads current stats and information every single day...and their player cards update their results every day as well.
If you are thinking of running head to head thru a server...how about doing a daily feature with OOTP?
Is that possible?
I would LOVE to see if OOTP could do that.
Then you can follow along with the actual season real-time.

I'd also really like to see the real-time game cast get some love. I know this isn't the interface thread...but I feel OOTP should now be designed for higher resolutions.

This...

Plus, I would say go with which ever head-to-head mode is the easiest to implement for OOTP 18. See how well it's received, then expand on it from there. If players love it, give them more. If no one likes it or it's hated, then at least not much time and/or resources have been wasted on developing it.

If I was given the choice, I'd chose straight up head-to-head, with players using the "honor system", only because it seems like the simplest one to implement.

H2H online would only really be worth if it there was some sort of streaming integration built-in so that it the games could be played live and watched by others. But it would be really cool for playoff games.

The first and third options seem most appealing to me.

The first option, Challenge a Friend, seems like it would be a natural feature in the course of development of OOTP. Since a lot of people will use this feature with real players, I'm sure you could also implement a way to ensure that there is no cheating in those cases specifically.

The second option, Head to Head, seems like a logistical nightmare.

The third option is pretty cool, but I think it would only be viable if this mode also had a single-player option, that is, the ability to play this alone against the computer. That should get a bit more mileage out of it.

I think it would be a lot of work for a low percentage of people who would use it...none of this enhances the single player GM experience, which is by far the most utilized mode. The time spent on these could be spent improving upon an already existing foundation. That's not to say there shouldn't be new features, but I'd stay away from the "gamey" stuff

Well, but doing something like #3 would potentially attract a new breed of customers.... which would bring in more revenue, which would result in more resources for all game modes.

I'm for #1 and #3. Although I'm not the audience (I won't even buy the games) it'd be great that OOTP has such "glamour" mode like Ultimate Team.

But if you have it, you will absolutely have to add another "glamour" mode -- MyCareer aka playing for one baseball player (similar to Inside The Park Baseball). It would attract many new players too.

#2 would be useful for online leagues. Not necessarily for all games as that would be extremely time consuming. But maybe a "Game of the Week" and certainly some playoffs and the World Series.

a new breed of ciustomers would be a good thing .... but none of these are features i'd use. That being said, as long as development of these doesn't detract from fixing or developing current features, i just don't have to use them.
