Reliever stats

How should I go about looking for relievers who put up good stats? The guys have good strikeout and walk rates, or the guys who have low home run/hits rates?

I generally look at K/9, WHIP, and FIP- for relievers.

I look @ ERA, WHIP, K/BB, and HR/9.

you should apply different thresholds to SP vs RP too.. HR/9 is much more damaging to a RP than a SP in a given season. so, movement becomes more important to a RP than a SP. you don't want a top-3 reliever giving up more than the league average HR/9ip.

I give a little more with walks too. a good bb/9 for a starter is < 3 or so... for an RP i will let that go a bit higher if they are awesome at the other thigns (k/9, whip etc). but, there is a point where weak control will make a 70-80/80 rp much weaker than their rating leads you to believe

ERA has too many factors that the pitcher does not control to blame him for it... i do look at it though. i try to translate it by looking at bad luck (elevated babip),,, if i see a reason, i won't hold them accountable for a bad 1-season ERA.

stick to the rates (k/9 bb/9). even whip needs to consider defense, so it needs a slight translation when comparing 2 different players or different season's data just like ERA.

ERA is not a very reliable stat for relievers. One or two bad games can blow it up for the season and not really represent his body of work.

I look for WHIP. Relievers who throw strikes (walks will kill ya) and don't allow many hits are the go to guys out of the pen. The other team can't win without base runners.
