Bullpen usage
So I was curious on your guys experience and thoughts on something. I been talking to some OOTP vets that use basically a bullpen by committee instead of a set bullpen in our online league. They basically put all this relievers as MR and put the guys who would normally be set up men and closers as being used more often with all three of them having secondary role of closer. And always atleast having one that says Emergency SP if not the game may not grab the best pitcher. In your experience does the game do better at handling bullpen this way or the tradional way of a closer and two set up men and then couple middle relievers and an emergency starter?

plus and minus to each
i think with enough understanding, you could get the all-mr way to work... it depends on how strictly you want a particular person to close or if you are mostly fine with more of a rotation... because even if you put one as a secondary role of closer, if he is ahead in the pecking order for MR he will be tired often... if he's the 2nd+ MR, then he's going to be available for closing duties more often. i'd consider a hybrid of that... you don't have to go all one way or another. maybe you have a hands-down guy you want to close... you set him to clsoer with high leverage secondary, so that he is used more often, if that's the main concern. then the rest as MR with no SU... or maybe just 1 setup if he's hands-down better than the rest etc etc.. typically i jsut use a fairly normal setup. i use a secondary high leverage role for my "top" releivers i want the game to use the most. if i'm only comfortable with 1 MR, i set the other to to "use less." (avoid high leverage will actually use them more... this is a good option when you have a weak starting rotation that can't eat up innings... if oyu have a strong rotation, use "use less often" over avoid high lev.) i rarely even bother with a lefty specialist... your manager will use a lefty in that situation as needed (manager's slider relative to that), i'm pretty sure... maybe to a lesser degree, though. so who cares about that one if it's such a small portion of life. i do use it on occasion - possibly on a younger prospect that's developing and 3rd MR or LongR. what i suggest is you learn what the ai does for each of these roles in various configurations. don't worry about what tehy are "supposed" to mean to baseball or in real life... only care about how the game behaves and manipulate one factor at a time until you get hte behaviour you want. my goals were basic... make sure the top 3-4 relievers get the absolute most work possible durring the year and minimize the rest. when i have a weak pen or more rarely a very deep one, i do adjust a slight amount, but i'd still rather have my top 4 guys getting 60+ innings (some get 70-90). i also try to get 1 person to get most of the saves... i stil use high-lev on closer when i only have 3 stud relievers.. if i have 4 i drop it off the closer in an effort to get him more saves, but possible less total innings. if you want the clsoer to be used more, use MR or SU secondary or high leverage and see what the difference is in a simmed year by comparison (change 1 factor at a time!) when i did this, i re-used the same year so that my team and pen were essentially the same throughout. if you keep going, i'd make use of editor to make sure your pen stays consistent while learning. |
