Corrupt players.dat file

I have a players.dat file that is corrupted, is there any way to fix this? When I look on the news messages, the pictures say "Joe Unknown" and show a default picture, and when I click on a player link the game crashes. But if I substitute the players.dat file from when I made a backup of my game before the season started (I am now currently in August) everything works perfect except for the players that were in the amateur draft, who all are Joe Unknown's.
I can just use my backup files and replay the season but I have a lot of time invested in this season already (it is 2011 and i play through every game). But I am hoping there is someway to fix this players.dat file. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Usually a damaged players.dat file would be a show-stopper. What is wrong with it that makes you believe that that file in particular is corrupted?
