Just installed OOTP8 and it won't even start on my computer

Hello,

I just downloaded, installed and purchased OOTP8 on my laptop (pc). Everytime I double-click on the icon to attemp to start the game I get the following errror message and it won't open:

ootp8.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Same Here

Here is the error info:

I am using PC - Vista (2007)

"OOTPB Won't Start at All, or Error when starting game: "The application failed to initialize properly (0x0000005). Click on ok to terminate application."

1. In your Control Panel, open the System control panel applet.
2. Click the Advanced tab
3. Under Performance, click Settings.
4. Click the Data Execution Prevention tab.
5. Change the Data Execution Prevention ("DEP") setting to "turn on DEP for essential sevices only"
6. OK out of the control panel. - this is my current setting, and the problem continues to exist.

7. If you are using Vista, right-click on the OOTPB 2007 icon and select "Run as Administrator."
8. Try again! - I did this several times and got the below message each time.

Problem signature:

I'm kind of pissed off that there isn't a better way to solve this (forums are not as good a person-to-person e-mails, for example). I just paid $20 for something that doesn't work. If there is a delay on fixing this, I'm calling my credit card company to void the transaction.

Are you running in administrator mode? Is your game patched to version 8.0.0.13? You might try uninstalling and reinstalling, as occasionally the installation process causes issues.

We will do our best to help you out, but please realize that this is the holiday season and most everyone is fairly busy.

administrator mode - isn't this solved by right clicking the icon and selecting "run as administrator"? If so, then yes, I have tried that and it does not work. If not, I don't know where to look in Vista to change the administrator settings. I assume I am the administrator, however, as I am the main user (only other user is "guest") on my computer.

8.0.00.13 - I just downloaded OOTP8 this morning. Shouldn't that be the most up-to-date version? I've looked on the "download" section of the site and can't find a patch for any of the versions, let alone one for OOTP8. Am I missing something? - http://cms.ootpdevelopments.com/inde...page=downloads

uninstalling - I have had this problem with OOTP 2007 before. I played with the trial version this past august and had the same problem. I did not buy the game then because of the problem. I bought it this time after reading that the startup problem I am having was fixed in a patch. I assumed the patch in the "2007" version was updated in the "OOTP8" version. I did try reinstalling back in august to no avail. I have not tried reinstalling this time. I will do so, but let's assume that this isn't going to work.

I'm pressing here because this is supposed to be a Christmas gift.

Thanks.

EDIT - I tried to reinstall and it still does not work.

The "fault module" listed is nvoglv32.dll, which is an Nvidia driver dll. Have you tried updating your video drivers?

It's practically a brand new computer. Do I need to update my drivers?

With nVidia drivers, yes, I hate to say it but yes you probably should update your drivers at the nVidia site. Vista is a grand program, but I really hate all the problems it creates compared to XP.

Keep us informed about your issue so we can try to get you running!

OK, so the computer is newer than the latest version of the driver. I updated it anyway just in case. The problem still exists.

Edit - I'm not sure what happened, but it works now. It wasn't the driver, as I already had the updated version (and reinstalled and restarted twice after trying to update without it working). Computers are funny.

Thanks for your help. Have a good Christmas, I know my son will now.

Great, I'm glad to hear that everything worked out well! I hope that your son enjoys the game.
