Inaugural Draft Problem

I started a new league, put all of the players into a draft, and had the computer do all of the picks. After doing this I noticed the computer drafted very oddly, taking unknown players with early picks and letting players like A-Rod and Pujols fall down to the 4th and 5th rounds. Has anybody else noticed this and is it being fixed?

Which version of the game were you using? Were you playing with scouts on?

What were the ratings of these unknown guys? Did they stack up to A-Rod and Pujols? Were they incredibly good prospects?

First off, I looked back at the draft and Arod and Pujols were selected middle second round, not 4th like I mentioned earlier.

1) I'm using the 08 demo as I'm trying to decide whether or not to purchase.

2) I believe scouts were on, not sure how to check.

3) My team choose Homer Bailey with the 11th pick. Now, looking at his ratings he's not a bad prospect, however if in real life MLB decided to redraft everyone, there is no way you can tell me a team would select Homer Bailey before they choose Arod or Pujuols.

The players selected do seem to be talented, Philip Hughes, Yovanni Gallardo, Adam Loewen, but I just don't picture teams passing on 2 of the greatest players in baseball to pick a young unproven pitching prospect.

Well, with scouts on, mind you that different teams will rate players differently. They may see the prospects they took as projected multi-time MVPs.

I'm not sure that everyone wouldn't immediately draft Pujols in a real like redistribution draft, but I'm sure that many wouldn't immediately draft A-Rod. You have to consider more than a player's present performance? How old are they and how many years will they have left with your system? How much money will they cost you? If Kansas City had to pay A-Rod's current salary, it would destroy their franchise.

I agree, I don't necessarily think Arod would be the first pick in every draft, or any for that matter. However, I don't think teams that aren't financially strapped, like Atlanta, wouldn't be using the first pick for a player like Homer Bailey and passing up on players like Felix Herandez, Johan Santana, and Josh Beckett.

Maybe it is just a matter of differing opinions and not really a bug.

How do you tell if scouts are on? Is there a draft profile where I can tell my team to favor veterans over prospects or pitching over hitting, anything like that?

From the Game Setup screen found in the Game dropdown menu, look at the Global Setup tab and the Game Options heading within it. If the Use Complete Scouting System is checked, you are using scouts.

If you aren't drafting your own team, I don't know that you can tell the AI to favor certain types of players. Individual AI GM profiles skew more towards veterans or young players, for instance, as do individual scouts. In your team's homepage, there is a Strategy tab. On the right side of that screen, there are some sliders under the Overall Roster Strategy heading. They include favoring veterans or prospects, hitting over pitching, etc. I'm not sure when these sliders are applied, however. I know that they affect AI trading and roster decision making, but I don't know if they affect drafting auto-draft choices for a human team. You could try it out.
