2008 is maddeningly slow
I have a brand new computer that hauls butt with Vista. The game takes approximately 20 minutes to save. When it autosaves when the new year rolls over it takes about 30 minutes to go to the new year. On certain days of the season, it takes about 5 minutes to sim one day. I have uninstalled this program and reinstalled 2 times. I have created several leagues and the problem is still there. Any help would be apprecitated.

Which version are you using? How large are the leagues you are running? Do you have an anti-virus program that is scanning each file as you are saving them?

There must be some structural problem. Just for perspective my league, size 343MB saves in 21 seconds. New computer 4GB RAM using XP. My AV autoscan is on.
Have you checked fragmentation? The other thing you could do is use a quick start league that is unplayed, check the size, and time how long it takes. When I do this it takes 10 seconds for 69MB. I'm guessing that if an unplayed league takes a long time for you to save then the problem may be outside the game.

I am using 8.0.0.13. I am playing a standard major league system including the minor leagues. I have made no changes to this league. I run McAfee, but I don't believe that it is scanning each file because I have the slow problem when simulating, when clicking on a players history etc. As far as fragmentation, I have no idea how to check that, I am not the most computer savvy person.

It could be your league size. I've also found that saving all box scores and game logs slows things down considerably. Also, if you have a ton of free agents in the pool that can also slow things down to a snail's pace.

I do not save any box scores or game logs. I think it may be my virus protection, but I don't know how to cut it off just for this game. I think I have to cut the whole thing off. Does anyone know how to leave this program out of McAfee?

You would just have to shut it off when playing the game, if you think that's the culprit. I don't see how that would leave you at risk for much, so long as you're not downloading things off the web willy nilly. You just disable it when you're playing OOTP and turn it back on afterwards.

THank ya'll for all the help. I turned the virus protection off and it was signifigantly better. At auto save it took less than one minute compared to 30. I don't know why it takes so long with the virus protection on, but wow what a difference.
Thank ya'll again!! |

Going forward you do want to use the windows defrag utility or acquire a third party one. Fragmented files on your HD will definitely slow things down over time.
