What were the problems with 2006?

I haven't spent as much time with 2006 as I have with other versions of the game, as my online league has stayed with 6.5. What exactly are the main issues that caused so much dislike with 2006? I'd specifically be interested in the problems with Online Leagues, and stats. Thanks.

Read the OOTP 2006 forum from beginning to end, you'll find all your answers there. No one person knows everything that was wrong with it, the problems were reported by many. What one person didn't like, another did like.

For online leagues, read the online leagues forum, same thing again.

Let's just say that if you bought the game at release, you didn't play it too much unless you were trying to find more bugs or some AI problems. I remember that the online wouldn't even work until almost the final patch. The 2006 out right now, is way better than when it was first released. Sorry I can't elaborate as I am not one of those nitpicky people who keep track of all the details and try every little feature out.

Start with these four threads. Grab a snack and a drink and get comfortable.

Why should I buy 2006?

Your opinions please...

I didn't think I would say this

Your final verdict of final version?

Dola,

Oh yeah, I forgot this one from wayyyy back (August) which is near and dear to my heart because Charlie Hough welcomed me to the forums in that one. Here it is, "Open Letter to the OOTP Developers":

Open Letter to the OOTP Developers

But enough negativity. I hope this suffices, Grypht, because today is a day for looking forward and rejoicing!

Yeah. That seems realistic.

I'll read the links provided, but no one has a brief summation?

1. People mostly loved OOTPB 6.0/6.12/6.5 from what I could gather. I did.

2. However, in order to move OOTPB forward, a program rewrite (OOTPB 2006) was necessary.

3. This caused a delay in releasing 2006 until May 31, and three major patches were needed.

4. Some desirable features from 6.0/6.12/6.5 were left out in the process due to time constraints.

5. Some other highly anticipated and previously requested improvements were not provided either, for the same reason.

6. The new game turned out to be easier to set up, handle, and enjoy for fictional players like me than for historical players, and the accuracy of their historical simulations were sometimes compromised either by design faults or by not understanding the effect of certain game settings. Also, online league players had many significant problems of their own from what I read.

7. So while the 2006 was a step forward in a lot of ways (your question was about what was perceived to be wrong, not right, with 2006 so I will not go into the positives here of which there were many), it was looked at as a step backward by some folks. Some went so far as to call it a public beta test for 2007.

Again, enough about OOTPB 2006, at least from me. I enjoyed the game despite missing some things and putting up with others; many other users enjoyed it as well and many did not. However, I will say that I think many more of us are going to enjoy OOTPB 2007 from what I saw today.

8. Many had an unanticipated, unrealistic expectation of the game after the rewrite. They were badly let down by many issues.

It was hard to explain, "this feature is unimplemented, not taken out", and frankly the buying public makes no distinction between the two.

That will depend on the person...for me....its hard to describe in specifics...but it was harder for me to connect to in the way I had in OOTP 3 thru 6.5...and as hard as I tried....that eventually made it not much fun and more like chore.

I'm sure there will be a ton of different reactions....but I can tell...my reaction is going to positive one from what I've seen so far....just how positive...I will have to wait and see when its done.

9) For people who played out their games the PBP was at times slow, at other times difficult to understand the play that occured, and illogical plays showed up where a pop up that the infielder dropped would roll all the way to the corner (and only the corner, never into the gap) or a "towering shot to the wall" is then routinly caught by the outfielder.

Leave it to Yank to put it all in perspective.

The best course. In addition, discuss it in the 2006 forum where those threads, and where this one should be moved to, are located.

This is the way I look at 2006. It is v1 of OOTP Reborn. (Re)birth causes pain... and there was pain, but it leads to something new and wonderful. I didn't really hop on board the OOTP train until v4, but I'm sure there were growing pains when v1 was born, but it grew into something great that people looked at lovingly (v6.51). 2006 was new (and sometimes new babies are butt ugly), but it is already blossoming into something much better (I assume based on all of the things I've read).

It took the original OOTP several versions - actually not really until version 4, IIRC - to really work at a level I found acceptable. I hopped on at OOTP2, but the game was incredibly buggy at that point. It crashed a lot. Its features were limited. It didn't do nearly as much as it would later.

OOTP3 was a step forward, but it was with version 4 that the game really started to blossom, and that blossoming was complete with OOTP6-6.5. At that point, I think Markus exhausted what he could do with that engine.

But what I dont understand is some of these posters who STILL hold a grudge against the 1.0 version. For sure it was disappointing ... I for one was less than impressed... but if you stuck with it... it became quite playable and enjoyable after patches were released.

Now with 2007... we have the improved looks, database, flexibility, and the missing features from 6.5! I don't know how anyone could complain or have a negative view at this point.

We know if there is ANY problems that Markus will not stop until they are addressed... and because of that I just dont understand anyone having a negative opinion of 2007 at this point.

Some people, it also seemed, unconformible to the new layout. I personally liked it. But, the old design had its pluses. They say you should not change a great thing, but when the coding had a mind of its own, a change was needed. I did not think we would be able to see expansion in the old version.

Take a look at Madden on the 360. Its two versions in and STILL missing features and customizability of the last gen Madden. And EA has a whole team of people. Not that EA should be a benchmark or anything, but I think given that it was a re-write, I wasn't surprised at some features missing from 2006.
