Fatigue & Player Usage Questions
In 2006 a disproportionate number of players ( usually Firstbaseman ) would end up playing every game in season after season. Catchers would, if fatigue was set to any level other than "off", be limited to a lesser percentage of games played. Many players would play extra-inning games, at strenuous positions, with no diminishment in effect. My questions:
1.) Has the fatigue/usage part of the game been improved to more closely mirror real-world conditions? 2.) Has the introduction of weather impacted the fatigue models? If 50 minute rain delays cool off your starter, do you then have relievers being brought in? 3.) Related to the above, if weather cancels a game, do doubleheaders ensue? And what happens to fatigued players as a result? 4.) Do pitcher stamina ratings reflect overusage? Do hitters lose effectiveness gradually as games and seasons roll along? 5.) Do catchers experience "dead legs" as seasons play out, and become slower and more worn out along the way? These are just off the top of my head, so Im sure others will chime in here with related questions. I just have concerns that a reasonably accurate fatigue model is less likely to be thought about than, say, pitch-by-pitch mode--and fatigue-caused injuries or degraded performance is a huge modifier to realistic simulation results. |

One impression I had with 2006 - and I didn't study it or anything so it's just an impression - is that there wasn't enough variability among players regarding how quickly they fatigued. There are guys out there who can play every day and feel nothing, or very occasional iron horses who can play pretty much every day several years in a row, with Ripken and Gehrig being the epitome of that. On the other end, there are guys who need to rest every third or fourth day or they wear down.
It seems to me that players who are quite old or quite young should probably have less stamina. Obviously, position plays the biggest role, with 1B being the least strain and C being the most, but even within particular positions there is a good range of variability. I don't think it's accurately reflected in OOTP, but like I said, I may be wrong.

I noticed only computer controlled players can play every game. On my team everyone suffers fatigue during the season and I haven't been able yet to get anyone up to 150 games. If they come in as a pinch hitter in a "tired game", or play a defensive role in the 9th inning, it makes their fatigue worse. |
