logo creation for OOTP2007 (Question for GIMP users)

So after seeing the thread for the incredible logo options 2007 will have, I am about to start up my logo creation again.

I had been using PSP 9, but my HD crashed about 6 months ago and I lost my license info. SO, instead of shelling out another $70 bucks or so for version XI, I downloaded GIMP to test it out.

I am liking it so far, but I wanted some info from some other GIMP users out there.

1) I would like to make a template for my circular logos. In PSP, I could create the circles, then "center" them on the grid. This made it easy to make symmetrical layers on top of other layers. I don't see how to do this in GIMP. Anyone have an idea?

2) I finally figured out how to do arcing text under Xtns>>Script-Fu>>Logos>>Text Circle! however, it seems to always create the text as its own file. Is there a way to create this text on an already existing file as an overlapping layer? And if so, how do you go about doing that and then aligning it to your logo?

Any other hints you GIMP experts would like to pass along would be great as well. Thanks in advance guys

I'm a GIMP user and I've read this in hopes that someone else that does what you're talking about can help, because I cannot. I tried making circle logos using knuckler's template (which is very good and located in his sig), but for whatever reason mine always ended up looking really choppy around the outer circle.

I've also fiddled with with the Text Cirlce thing and have not really figured it out.

That's why I got in the busines of the generic logos... someone helped me figure out how to do them 'easily.'

Couldn't you write to the makers of PSP and get your license info back? Seems a shame to spend the money and just throw it out the window just because you lost the original license code.

I'm anything but an expert, but if you are doing anything circular in GIMP it helps to use the polar grid.

Craig, I did indeed email Corel about it. Just waiting on a response. Since it's been about 3 or 4 days, I am thinking I might be out of luck. We'll see. But I'll play around with GIMP until then.

The Wolf, that sounds interesting. Could you give me an explanation of this Polar Grid? Not sure I am familiar with that.

You know how you can snap your drawing node to the nearest grid intersection? Instead of the grid to which you can snap being the normal rectangular grid or an isometric grid, with a polar grid it's a circular grid with a kind of a central pole. It makes it easier to do circular work. I hope that makes some kind of sense.

See page 130 of the GIMP manual, which you can find online at ftp.iasi.roedu.net/mirrors/ftp.gimp.org/ gimp/docs/gimp-user-manual.pdf
