Is it still to easy to re-sign your own players?

I started a league using Rolen's opening day set, and immediately decided to lock up Chase Utley and Ryan Howard long term. Both were making the minimum MLB contract of 360,000 per year, I decided however I would lock them up anyway, and signed each to a 5 year deal worth about 23 mil, which equals out to about 4.5 mil a year. Should they have signed these deals? especially Howard? Both could have potentially been making star money had they waited for free agency, or if they had somehow at least used free agency as a negotiating tool???

I wrote this a couple of months ago, and am wondering if this is still the case with 2007?

Perhaps if these young studs had (Edit: Scott Boras as an) agents in the game, they would have been talked out of signing for so cheap.

Did you lock up Ryan Howard after his rookie season? or his second season?

It can be quite difficult, especially if the player is not happy with something that you've done or how the team is going...
