Great writeup, Tiger Fan. I am a fictional simmer myself but this has inspired me to attempt a historical sim.

Cool screenshot too!

Nice writeup Tiger Fan. I see the Cubs only post season appearance was 1989 resulting in a loss. If you have time could you comment on how the '84 Cubs did?

Marcus might need to consider to cutting something out - 'Age'?

Another option is to shorten the first name to the first initial only.
I like the screen and find it easier to read than v2006.

The screen works for me "as is" but if Markus were to make a change rather than cutting out age, which I like to see as my league grows from real to fictional over time, he could abbreviate bats\throws to a simple

I usually don't do historical sims. I just might have to with 2007!

I really enjoyed this game up until version 6. 6.5, to me, seemed like an EA move, where you basically pay for a patch. It wasn't that expensive so I didn't care too much.

Last year, to me, was a total loss. I didn't like the game much at all. I think most of the things that I didn't like have been taken care of.

I've never been a big fan of historical sims either. This may change my mind. I may just have to do a historical sim or ttwo when 2007 comes out.

It wuld seem that last years errors will be a distant memory. I didn't pre order last year. I was very happy I didn't. I may have to this year. I am getting very excited about this year's version of OOTP!

Would definately require cutting first name to inital only to have enought space.

thanks, glad you enjoyed reading it. Here is some notes on the Cubs. If anyone wants to know about any player/team post here and I will do my best to give you some info.

First thing you have to keep in mind is I was assigning rookies to their original teams since the league started in 1901 so the '84 Cubs were quite different from real life. Jody Davis was the only everyday player on the real life Cubs roster who began his major league career at Wrigley, so none of the others played for the '84 Cubs in my replay.

In the sim the '84 Cubs finished 4th in the NL East with an 82-80 record. The Cardinals would finish with the majors best record at 103-59 and went on to win the World Series for the 4th year in a row. One of the Cards leaders was real life 84 Cub Leon Durham (.302,25,113). The Mets also had a very strong team in '84 with Cy Young Winner Nolan Ryan (22-6, 1.94) and MVP Darryl Strawberry (.273,47,104) leading the way.

As for the sim '84 Cubs, they had a decent offense featuring outfielders Oscar Gamble (.251,25,74), Mel Hall (.300,23,84) and Joe Carter (.240,22,84). Davis posted numbers similiar to real life behind the plate (.249,18,63 sim vs .256,19,94 real life). The infield did not compare to real life as Sandberg, especially, was missed. In '84 sim Sandberg was very close to real life finishing .308,17,77 for the Phillies.
Code:
	SIM REAL LIFE
1B Andre Thornton (.275,20,70) Leon Durham (.279,23,96)
2B Pat Tabler (.249,8,52)	Ryne Sandberg (.314,19,84)
3B Roy Howell (.262,10,34)	Ron Cey (.240,25,97)
SS Vance Law (.223,13,73)	Larry Bowa (.274,0,17)
Pitching was the weak spot for the sim '84 Cubs as there was no Rick Sutcliffe (16-1 in real life that year) to lead the way. Instead the rotation looked like this:
Code:
Rick Reuschall	13-16, 3.18
Don Schulze	12-11, 4.24
Tom Filer 9-11, 4.54
Randy Martz 10-17, 4.78
Dennis Lamp 8-4/ Buddy Schultz 4-3
The bullpen was solid with Lee Smith, Bruce Sutter and Craig Lefferts combining for 41 saves.

1989 would be the dream season in Chicago as the Cubs would make their first postseason appearance since 1943 and they did so by winning a 1 game playoff over their archrivals from St Louis. Young first baseman Mark Grace (.365,11,80) would win a batting title, an MVP and a gold glove in his second pro season while Greg Maddux (19-9, 2.82) would claim the Cy Young. Unfortunately they would fall to veteran JR Richard and the Houston Astros in the NLCS. Between 1977 and 1995 either Houston or St Louis represented the National League in the World Series on all but 4 occassions.

In 1943 the Cubs would lose the World Series in 5 games to the Red Sox after finishing 7 games ahead of St Louis for their first pennant since 1911. The pitching of Hank Wyse (20-10, 2.76), Jesse Flores (20-6, 2.78) and Vern Olsen (17-9, 2.36) more than made up for the Cubs popgun offense that saw no one hit doubledigit homeruns. Chicago lost the World Series in 5 games to Boston in 1909 and to the Athletics in 6 games in 1911.

Does historical leagues give you the correct stadiums and park factors automatically too?

I'm curious to see how the new "slugging" SS's like Nomar, Jeter, Tejada, A-Rod, etc. are doing in comparison to guys like Honus Wagner, Mr. Cub, Cal Ripken etc. of the past.

History is a beautiful thing. This was the year I fell in love with baseball.

Great write-up, TigerFan. I'm finally becoming excited about the possibilities of this new version. Keep up the good work Marcus et beta team. Don't forget the AI!!!

I'd love to know if my Royals managed more than their one real-life World Series win in your sim.

Who has been the most successful expansion team? Did you do anything with the expansion drafts and how did they turn out?

When playing did you notice the difference between 80s baseball and late90s baseball in terms of power and offence?

Great work TigerFan (as usual). I'm guessing that if someone used a different, but Lahman-compatible DB, they could follow whatever "history" is in that db? I ask because I've got Negro League and Japanese historical databases that are nearly ready for use, and would love to do something like this with, say, the history of Japanese baseball.

What year does your Japanese db start in?

1936 - the actual first year of pro baseball in Japan. Prior to that it was purely amateur.

Note: the db's not finished, but it is in progress and someday it will be done and I will release it to the community at that point. In the meantime, I will use it for leagues and/or dynasties of my own to spur me to completing it.
