Gambo 2007DB after running two histories

I dont have enough time to give player by player info (Raidergoo has done this quite superbly) but I wanted to give a summation on what I see with the database.

Just finished running two history of baseballs with my DB, each with 3 year recalc, players to original teams, one with no-minors, one with AAA-A minors.

The Good...
1) Everybody is importing properly and I honestly don't see much in issues with bum players having great careers. In my sim without minors Troy Neel batted .259 with 369 career HRs, Joe Charbonneu (king of the flash in the pans) had a strong 1979-81 and made appearances in the majors in 82,87 and 90 before retiring.
2) Expansion and league updating is cool. Also financial updating is excellent. The game handles expansion excellently though I sometimes think too many excellent young players are left open. The database works perfectly with this part of the game.

The Bad...
1) Because of the setup of the database the only minor issue is that when you click over to view a players "real statistics" it will show their first "minor league season" (created by me and used to import them) and therefore their total career stats will be off. This is a minor cosmetic issue.
2) The database works much better if you have minor league systems set up for the league. Especially in the 1960s and later. Without the minor league systems the teams don't hold enough players and developing prospects are less likely to be retained and subsequently not resigned later leading to their eventual retirement at an early age.

I think this DB is just as important to OOTP2007 (from my perspective) as the automatic expansions, rule changes and financials.

Several immediate questions: When using the minor league systems, are you filling out the minors with fictional players or ghost payers? If fictional players, do a few occasionally make it to the big leagues? (Hopefully, a few do, but not many and not as ML stars.) Do the ML players seem to be reaching the majors pretty much on schedule as IRL? (Hopefully most are ready by their actual ML debut, with an occassional few debuting early and an occassional few taking a couple extra years of seasoning.)

I hope that you'll have a lot more details in the future. Thanks a lot for all your work on this DB!

Good questions...

I am using ghost players. As for players reaching the majors at an appropriate time?

If you use the minor league system. I find that players tend to play at the major league level at about the right times. If I had to determine a swing in any direction I would say it is on the early side of the coin. However, this is much more the case with stars rather than average players. Just a couple of guys I looked at from my 1st sim is Derek Jeter had a cup of coffee with the Yankees in 1992 was drafted in the expansion draft but didnt play for Colorado til 94. Jose (or John - the mediocre one) entered the league in 1997 but didnt play in the majors til 1992 (which is essentially dead on).

With reserve rosters (no minors) teams keep less players and come september when rosters expand the players end up in the majors almost right away to some extent.

Gambo - Should I host this DB file for 2007 users? What about the other DB mentioned in your sig.?

Host this one, it's a fun one. I've been using it for two weeks.

Done.

Can someone tell me why I'd use this instead of Lahman?

A way of getting around this - which would require some basic database surgery - would be to find common import years (like 1901) and make versions of the database where only real MLB stats are included before that year. For instance, for a 1981 import, you would basically have the Lahman database as is until 1981, at which point your database would take over.

The disadvantage would be that you would have to either pick specific years (limiting people's options) or do it for all years (a lot of tedious work).

I used to do this myself with career average databases I used.

In my readme I quickly describe the how to do the exact thing your talking about during the initial import. (Opening the files in notepad and cutting out the seasons before the initial import, then pasting those years from Lahman). The issue comes in when you do the yearly importation of rookies. The statisitics have to be there to create a player and because that is when it stores their "real life" stats it remains in the game.

As for Padres Fan's quetion? This database imports players when they made their pro debut instead of their major league debut. For example, Don Mattingly will import in 1979 instead of 1982, Hank Aaron will import in 1951 instead of 1952 because that is the actual year they entered their 1st major league organization via draft, Free agent etc...

I also have an updated version of this DB to send in (1.5) with another 1000+ players from the 30-60s with the correct importation years. (Joe Dimaggio is one of the multitude)

So this is an updated or tweaked version of the latest Lahman DB then?
