Mods for Fantasy Play
Though my own interests are in fictional play, I recently had a discussion with a friend who participates in a fantasy baeball league. He told me that on each monday morning he selects his line up for the week, and then during the week he recieves points for various achievements compiled by his players (e.g. home runs, hits, etc.). The following monday he gets a report which tells him how his team did for the week. Though I have not used the Lahman database, I was wondering if a mod could be devised which would update OOTP rosters on a weekly basis. Thus, on a Monday morning, a league could use updated player ratings to reflect how they were doing at that exact point in the season. A person could then play out a week using those ratings or set a lineup for the week (which I believe OOTP '07 will permit) and then play their games using the stats from the mext monday so that their selected lineups performed as their real life counterparts had performed during that week. One weakness of many sports games is that they either use stats developed before the season to predict how people will do or have people replay a season with only one snapshot average which must represent a players entire season. This takes away a managers ability to make those important judgements about how to use hot and cold players. This seems like a possible opening for OOTP get a leg up on some other games and provide a more "realistic sim". I wondered what ideas you folks might have about this?

OOTP is a pretty realistic sim, but there is no real way to mimic exactly how a player is going to perform, especially in real life. And I prefer it this way.

To some extent, I don't see the point of getting that granular in a simulation. If you want to a game to produce exactly what the real players are currently doing, you might as well just follow the real games. The joy of fantasy baseball is having an idea of what a player might do based on his past stats, but not really knowing for sure. OOTP simulates this very well.

Week-to-week fluctuations in player performance probably aren't the best thing to base a simulation on. However, I guess you could do this if you really wanted to by exporting the rosters, changing the ratings, and reimporting. Seems like an awful lot of work to do, though.
But, hey, it's an interesting and different idea than I've heard.

Do players that are on hot streak get a boost in performance? and players that are on cold streak gets a decline hit in their performance? |
