Safe Out Of The Box?
I'm in unknown territory and could use advise from anyone willing to get it.
The way I like to play OOTP is to get a mod maker created MLB roster with full minors and take over my beloved Dodgers. I GM the team and play out every at bat with the field manager making all the decisions except substitutions during the game. I set all my lineups, rotations, etc all the way down to the lowest minors. I've been playing since version 4 and my gaming cycle seems to be the exact same thing every year. The game is released and I wait for an opening day roster for the year. It comes out and play out every game loving it. Then, some huge discovery is made to make the game more realistic (the last few years it's been in the creation mods and development and aging curves) and then I start over so that my league will benefit from the discovery. Then I play out as much as I can. Then the next year rolls around and either excitement for new features or conversion issues force me to start over with the cycle. Roster set, discovery, restart, new spring and new release. So I don't ever get really far on my league but have a great time playing it. Because of this cycle I rarely have to worry about the state of the game and it's stability. By the time I get going on my real league usually the game is in it's final mode. Last year I didn't even get the roster set until the game was almost done being patched. This year is way different. The conversion issues of the past aren't an issue. I already have a roster set the I like and would like to continue (Rolen's for 2006) and I'm hearing on the boards that the big realistic discovery may already have happened in beta testing. The things that would effect my league long term seem pretty well set. So my question is, how long should I wait to convert my league over? I know it doesn't matter in game when I do it, though I honestly may start over this roster set from opening day 2006 to benefit from the improvements. I fully understand that EVERY game comes out on release with bugs and that OOTP will have them. I'm fine playing through them and although they're annoying, I don't find them to be a deal breaker. What I do find to be a deal breaker is anything in the settings that needs retweaking to get it right. So, if I have to patiently sift through some spelling errors and or crashes to desktop with my league, I can deal. The stuff I don't want to find out is that something big in the game hasn't been working right and I'll need to start over six weeks after release. The reviews I'm reading and hearing are that the statistical stuff is very realistic and the AI is doing pretty good. So when should I pull the trigger and move the league over? |

Wow we play OOTP pretty much the exact same way. I've had the same experience you have. I think I'm going to start my league over again with 2007. I'm going to wait until a new roster is out and then start building my dynasty at that point. Until that point I'm just going to be playing with the game to get a handle on all the new reports and functions (because there are a TON of them). But I think the beta testers this year have done an AMAZING job at catching bugs that you and I would find frustrating and potentially making us restart our leagues. There are over 100 people now testing every little aspect and submitting bugs and complaints and it's amazing how fast Markus is able to fix these. Now there will be small bugs and patches, but unless Jesus himself is coding it that will always be the case. I feel that this year the game is being released as a final product and not a beta like last year. When March 23rd comes around I'd say go for it.

I also kind of need to do this so that I don't miss something and need to start over with another league. |

I fooled around with converting 2006 leagues a lot tonight and one thing you'll want to do if you convert your league is go through your league settings very carefully. I found that it 2007 brings over a lot of the "hacks/adjustments" I made in my 2006 version to make 2006 work better. By "hacks/adjustments" I mean changes to the default financials, modifiers, etc. 2007 has corrected or changed how most of these work it seems like so your 2006 settings may cause some choas when running under 2007. I haven't run a long sim on my existing 2006 leagues yet so I'm not sure what kind of effect this has, but I'm just throwing it out there for y'all to think about.
