How many feeder leagues??

My Fictional League has 20 ML teams with AAA, AA, A and rookie League. Each minor league has two leagues, so there are a total of 8 minor league leagues. My question is: how many College and H.S. feeder teams should I have if I want all my players to come from the feeder league, with out the game creating players that have not gone thru the feeder leagues.

Good question, this is something I didn't have time to mess with during my preview

I'm sure this is going to take some time to figure out precisely. Basically, however many rounds you want in your amateur draft, you should have enough players in the feeder leagues so that 1/4 of them (or more, or less, depending on how many years your feeder leagues allow players to stay) will fill a draft class.

So if you have 25 rounds for 24 teams, you will need 600 players in the draft. That would be 2400 players needed for a four-year feeder league, which would be 96 teams of 25, which just happens to be 24*4. That is the reasoning for needing four times the number of teams in your major league.

However, you could cut down on this by cutting down the number of years players are allowed to play in feeder leagues. If you only allow players in for two years (e.g., min age 17 max age 18), you only need to double the number of teams in your major league to produce a 25-round set of players.

The other alternative is to cut down on the number of rounds.

depends on what age range you will be using for your feeder leagues and whether or not you will be using ghost players.

using an age range of 5 years (14-18, 18-22, etc.), you can expect 6-9 players from each feeder team to enter the draft.

I dont want to hijack this thread but I have a quick question about the feeder leagues. If I wanted to create a college feeder league and have the rest of the ammy draft created.....would I then have a solid crop of players coming into the league? Would I have the same amount of talent as I would if I skipped the feeder league and went the traditional route?

more of my testing has shown that this doesnt always work out to be the best case, so i retracted my statements in the other feeder league threads

with a small league (10 teams) or a league with a small number of levels (AAA only), 4 times the ML teams is too many. on the opposite end, a large league (50 teams) or a league with many levels (AAAA, AAA, AA, A+, A, A-, SA, R, R-), 4 times the ML teams is waaaaayyyy too low.

its better to work under the assumption that 6-9 players will come from each feeder team, using an age range of 5 years (18-22, etc.), so my new recommendation is to approximate the # of feeder teams by using (5 * # of levels * # of teams at ML level) / 6

want less teams? 1) reduce the age range 2) use a combination of feeder and created 3) use ghost players in your league

IINM, this will all be in the manual.

That's why I mention that it should be based on the number of draft rounds you want. Those situations may call for a different number of rounds, which would affect the number of feeder teams you would need. Once you have an idea of how many draft rounds you need, the number of feeder teams needed can be determined pretty easily.

([number of teams in league]*[number of rounds in draft]*[difference between min and max age of feeder league + 1])/25

...should give you how many teams you need in your feeder leagues to fill a draft class.

I hope this formula makes it into the Manual or is sticked somewhere, I can see this being needed a lot.

Thanks for this reply. I had the preview but didn't have enough time to get to this. I like the formula you posted. In my fictional world, that would make 66 feeder teams, is this H.S and college combined or just the top feeder league level???

Both feeder leagues feed into the draft so it's combined. All feeder leagues are "top" feeder leagues.

Do players "come out early" from the feeder leagues? Or do they always stay until they hit the golden age?

Golden age.

Remember, this is NOT intended to truly replicate high school and college behavior.

Can you change the number of teams you want in a feeder like "College" if you wanted more teams in just that feeder system? For example, my MLB league has 36 teams and I think by default the feeder system will create at least 36 college feeder teams - can I add more to just the feeder league alone without having to add more to the parent league?

I've been trying to work this issue "backwards". That is, I'm trying to determine how many players a team might NEED each year (to draft) and still reasonably have enough room to fit him. It would seem illogical to have a 20 round draft if you're just replacing last year's 18th round pick with this year's 18th round pick.

yes, you can add teams to the feeder league without adding to the majors.

Wow, very cool.

Looks Like I will be redoing my college feeder system then. I had only 36 teams but I think I will do 50-60 teams. Maybe a mix of Div 1A and Div2A.....

Thanks for the info.

Lightbulb My self effort...

From what I'm planning on doing using ctorg's formula...

30 Team MLB with 30 Draft Rounds and 14-17 "HS"/18-21 "College" age feeder leagues.

# of College Leagues = 9
# of High School Leagues = 9
C Teams = 92
HS Teams = 88
Total Teams = 180

I used this site: http://www.ncaa-baseball.com/conferences/ and used teams to serve as college (more famous divisions like the SEC or Big 10) and high school (divisions like the Ivy League or Atlantic Sun).

No idea if that will offer enough players but hopefully it will.
