Worthplaying.com preview of OOTP 2007

"Although it still looks like it's being catered to baseball stat fanatics, Out of the Park Baseball 2007 is shaping up to be one of the most realistic and elaborate simulation games to date. "

First reply.

(everyone else does it, so I thought I'd give it a try.)

Cool. It seems to have been written by someone who is actually familiar with the game. I recall reading a review of a past version where someone complained about a missing element or two that were actually in the game.

"It still has some stiff competition in the form of the Baseball Mogul series"

The reviewer wrote that, but does anyone here actually believe that? I just can't see it.

I thought the reviewer was just showing his humourous side with that comment

That was kind of hard to read and not very informative. Reminds me why I don't usually read game reviews on game sites. I hate to be picky, but you don't "recruit" feeder league players, you draft them. There is a world of difference.

That said one more positive opinion on the pile doesn't hurt. I remember this time last year and this is the polar opposite. Last year it was all... "You mean this isn't in the game!!11!! Oh Noes!!" This year it's "Look what's back and what's new! WOW! " It's especially good to hear that from some of the most vocal critics of last year's game...

Ive tried several different versions of Mogul, including the last, there is no comparison,OOTP rules, always has. As a matter of fact,i wouldnt play Mogul,if it was the only baseball sim available on the planet.

Mogul has been, and always will be a 5 year old's sim. It is designed to be cheap and mass produced with no creative like OOTP. Long live the king!

I happen to purchase and enjoy both games.

OOTP 2006 was a monstrosity in more ways than one. Its guide alone was a whopping 350 pages of pure and unadulterated statistical baseball know-how.
I don't think "monstrosity" was the right word to use there.

No. The writer of the review was trying to use a word that conveyed the massive scale of the game and failed miserably. The word he used was a monstrosity.

Often times I think p/reviews are better done by people completely new to a game. If you're already familiar with a game you're probably going to rely more on the opinion of hardcore users. I think p/reviews on sites like this cater more to prospective customers and for them it's probably better to read the opinion of someone similar to themselves. Otherwise you're more reading about improvements over a previous version which really doesn't register for you when what you're looking for is more of an overall feel and answer to whether the game is actually fun. I didn't get that message from this article. It didn't even seem like he thought about trying to answer that question.

To serious baseball simmers, it's a joke. But I think for casual baseball simulation fans who just want to enjoy a light baseball sim, BM probably holds a lot of appeal. I'm guessing there are more of these kinds of people out there than we might think. For a lot of people I think OOTP probably just comes off as too daunting when for most people who try it it probably isn't (2006 somewhat excluded). Thankfully, I think OOTP realizes all this.

Ditto here on both accounts. It seemed rather slapped together, not well planned, not particularly well executed and I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't even proofread. But yes, it was positive and that's good to see. Being how it read, however, I'm not sure it will convince many people.
