TRTR : Day 20

Simming at the Speed of Light

By Jarmenia - - I was one of the more harsh critics of OOTPB 2006, but, unlike most people I wasn’t as critical about the user interface or the stat output.

A note about the hard drive - defragmenting your drive regularly will help speed it up regardless of what kind you have.

Here’s a good link that talks about how to use Windows Performance Monitor. I’ve been using it for years to find bottlenecks in my personal and professional systems. I’d suggest using it to try and find out where the bottlenecks are on your system as well.
I don't see the link in the blog, any chance you can post it here?

Question from a guy with minimal computer knowledge about loading retired players when viewing history.

I play solo, so let's say I'm playing out games in my current season and at the end of some random day I decide to look at some of my league history. OOTP loads the retired players into memory and I spend a little time looking things over.

Now I go back and play out my next game.
Are the retired players still in memory and affecting game performance until I save\exit OOTP? Or, are they cleared out when I exit the history screens?

In other words to maintain performance after looking at my league history should I be saving\exiting and then reloading ootp to clear the retired palyers from memory?

I love technical articles like this because I feel like I never know enough. Thanks jarmenia!

Some questions:

How can I tell for sure that my video card supports opengl2.0? Is there some online flash test or something? I have a "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950". From Intel's site it looks like it might only support up to 1.4 although it being only a few months old I thought it probably would. If it can't support 2.0 does that just mean OOTP won't be able to generate faces or is there other stuff it won't do too?

Also, I've been curious about this FaceGen and I imagine it might have been answered elsewhere, but did OOTP have to pay their company a licensing fee per unit sold or just a lump sum?

Good question! I was wondering that too.

Jarmenia's been a great asset to the game. Thanks for all you've done and your continued interest in getting it to clip along at or above expectations. Next year, let's share some focus on getting the TRTR links to speed along at comparable rates!

It's a fanboy thing, of no interest to normal people whatsoever, just clutters up the threads.

I would like to say that I thought today's blog was one of the best thus far. I'm happy to see a blog laden with facts and graphs, not just fluff about how much more I'm going to enjoy 2007 compared to 2006. Yes, they all say that, but they don't all have graphs. (I also liked the historical sim blog that had stats.)

This was a great blog. I REALLY, REALLY appreciate the technical knowledge brought to bear. I had the same problems with OOTP2006 and I know have A> nice assurance from someone who had the same issue that performance for large leagues is better and B> and understanding that I may want to buy more RAM for my PC.

Also I won't be using face gen and this blog just saved me time there. Neat feature, but not if it means I can't run as large a world.

Great job on the blog post, definately the best one yet from my perspective.

The faster the CPU the faster OOTP can crunch numbers. It should be noted that upgrading to a duel core processor will not give you any advantage in OOTP as OOTP is not a multi-threaded program.
So when, if ever, will it be multi-threaded? Next year?

Fibonacci pretty well nailed it. It's also used as a way to bump up your post count. (My method is to type knowledgeably about topics upon which I am lamentably ignorant.)

I'm going to put it down to cabin fever. It's nearing the end of winter; it's nearing the release date. Tempers are getting short and some of us are getting silly. (Female baseball players are NOT silly.)

My advice is that the next time you see someone posting "7th!", just shake your head, pass them by and mutter, "There but for the grace of God go I."

But really all I want to do is play.

So I'll try harder to be patient and hopefully the board will be patient with me.
And yes, I am still continuing my campaign to promote adding a 'mass select' option to Out of the Park 10.

Hey, that's my schtick.

(15th! Or is it 14th! as I don't count the OP?)

Why do people want to know why it matters that someone got the first reply in a thread? Seems like they're just trying to pad their post count. Naughty. Naughty.

Assuming that we are dealing with "apples to apples" I am very impressed by the sim times - looking forward to that.

This is seriously going to hurt my work performance...I miss the days of simming a season while I worked...and then making my off season changes every couple of minutes. I guess I am just going to have to find a slower computer. Maybe my teams will do better if I can't catch up...
