HOB - OOTP2007 style
With all the beta testing I miss dynasty writing so I thought I would give you a little something to whet your appetite for historical play. This is not a TRTR blog so it will not contain any new features. Instead it will just be me recapping in my old History Of Baseball format a season at random from my most recent test sim.
1987 - RED SOX GET REVENGE ON METS Well, it wasn't quite 1986 but the Red Sox and Mets did hook up in a World Series in this sim. It came a year later than real life but this was also quite a different Boston franchise from real life as well. To start with there was no curse of the Bambino as Ruth enjoyed 20 seasons in Boston and retired with a record 731 homeruns. Ruth also had 5 more roundtrippers in 19 postseason games and helped the Sox to a pair of World Series titles. The Ruth curse would instead be magic for Ted Williams and the boys of the 40's as Boston won 2 more World Championships. It would also bring good luck to Fenway in the 70's as Boston would claim 3 more championships in that decade. But this is 1987 and after finishing 3 games back of the surprising Toronto Blue Jays last season, the Red Sox were back in the postseason once again. Boston finished 6 games ahead of Milwaukee and 12 up on the third place Yankees in the regular season to set up a playoff with reigning World Champion Kansas City. Boston would need a Game Seven shutout from Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens (22-9, 2.83) to claim the Pennant. Meanwhile the Mets would have little trouble winning their second straight NL title as they downed Houston in 5 games. There would be no Bill Buckner to break the hearts of New Englanders this time around as Boston prevailed in 6 games with Lenny Dykstra grounding out to Mike Schmidt (I kid you not the series ended on a 3ua groundout) to end the Series. The Red Sox were a mix of homegrown talent (I assigned rookies to their original teams) and free agent signees. Code:

Phelps did not win any of the triple crown categories as he was 1 homerun shy of Mark McGwire, who hit 56 for Oakland and also trailed McGwire by 20 rbi's. Clemens was the only 20 game winner in the American League with teammate Atlee Hammaker and Scott Bankhead of Kansas City finishing second with 18 victories each. The Rocket's 295 k's were 6 shy of Baltimore's Mike Scott, who notched 301. The National League had a pair of tight races with the Mets finishing just 2 games ahead of second place Pittsburgh. St Louis and the Cubs were also in the mix until late September as both finished 6 off the pace. Houston's margin of victory was 2 games over San Diego with the Dodgers in third just a game back of the Padres. The Mets pitching, aside from 22 year old Dwight Gooden (19-6, 2.62) was marginal at best. However, the New York offense was far and away the best in the National League with youngsters Darryl Strawberry (.290,33,129), Lenny Dykstra (.304,18,103) and Kevin Mitchell (.256,16,119) leading the way. Dave Magadan (.294, 129 runs) was an outstanding tablesetter while Darryl Evans (.218,15,53) and Tony Bernazard (.274,15,60) added veteran leadership. Gooden won the first Cy Young of his career and Magadan was named the league's top rookie. The MVP award went to San Diego's Tony Gwynn (.382,16,95) who flirted with .400, a plateau only reached 3 times since 1901: Code:
.400 HITTERS Ty Cobb .430 in 1911 Rogers Hornsby .407 in 1922 Babe Herman .413 in 1929 Note: Ted Williams hit .398 in 1943 and Stan Musial hit .395 in 1947 1987 COMBINED LEAGUE LEADERS Since so many players are in the opposite league from real life due to free agency I thought I would post the combined league leaders rather than each league individually. Baltimore's John Shelby would probably be the last player you would expect to accomplish this feat but he became the first player since Jimmie Foxx in 1933 to hit 4 homeruns in a single game. Shelby, who turned the trick in May against Oakland, would hit just 8 total on the season. There were 2 no-hitters in 1987, one in each league. Brett Saberhagen of Kansas City and Fernando Valenzuela of the Montreal Expos each had the first no-hitters of their careers. Nolan Ryan (with 4), Claude Osteen, Bobby Shantz and Hugh Bedient (2 each) are the only players with multiple no-hitters in their careers. Later John Tudor and Tom Gordon would also end their careers with 2 no-hitters. Tracy Jones, a marginal outfielder with the Texas Rangers, would get hot in June and end up hitting safely in 36 games, the longest such streak since San Diego's Tony Gwynn had a 40 gamer in 1984. Gwynn's streak is the longest in National League history. The major league mark of 47 games belongs to Al Simmons who did it for the Athletics in 1928. 1987 MILESTONES 04-10-1987 Eddie Murray 300 Home Runs, while playing for St. Louis 04-19-1987 Robin Yount 1000 Runs Batted In, while playing for Detroit 04-29-1987 Rod Carew 1500 Runs Scored, while playing for New York(A) 05-02-1987 Jorge Orta 1000 Runs Batted In, while playing for San Francisco 05-31-1987 Buddy Bell 1000 Runs Batted In, while playing for Toronto 06-13-1987 Rick Reuschel 200 Wins, while playing for New York(A) 07-10-1987 Vida Blue 250 Wins, while playing for Oakland 07-24-1987 Dan Driessen 1000 Runs Scored, while playing for Baltimore 07-28-1987 Bill Madlock 1000 Runs Scored, while playing for Chicago(N) 08-11-1987 Gary Matthews 1000 Runs Scored, while playing for Pittsburgh 08-29-1987 Fred Lynn 2000 Hits, while playing for New York(A) 08-29-1987 Thurman Munson 2500 Hits, while playing for San Francisco 08-31-1987 George Hendrick 1000 Runs Batted In, while playing for Los Angeles 09-04-1987 Eddie Murray 2000 Hits, while playing for St. Louis 09-08-1987 Doug DeCinces 300 Home Runs, while playing for Milwaukee 09-19-1987 Paul Molitor 1000 Runs Scored, while playing for Boston 09-23-1987 Darrell Porter 300 Home Runs, while playing for Cleveland 10-02-1987 Andre Dawson 1000 Runs Batted In, while playing for Montreal

I assume this is with three year recalc on. Thanks for the post. I read it with my copy of Neft and Cohen by the computer. There's just enough variation to make the game somewhat unpredictable, which is exactly what a historical player wants.

Good to see that even with the recalc on there can be some large differences. I wasn't quite sure how well this would work. I don't want to play replicas of every season, but keeping the general production somewhat recognizable for a lot of guys is good. Gwynn and Boggs are pretty close, but Molitor and Trammell were nowhere near as effective at getting hits. McGriff finally broke 40 and in his first or second year, no less. Too bad Dwight Evans got a CEI.

Not certain, because I have deleted this league file and moved on to another one with the new build, but I would assume it was thru free agency. Btw, in my current sim Maris just hit 65 homers in 1961 to break Ruth's single season record of 60 set in 1921. Instead of Mantle, Maris was teamed with Rocky Colavito on the Indians that season. Colavito hit 44 but even with the power outburst the Tribe finished a distant fourth behind the Yankees.

Too many to count. I run a new full history sim (1901-2006) nearly every night and have it running during the day on occassion as well.
