A Question on Contract Negotiations (Historical)

The only comments I could find on contract negotiations were located in this thread:

Player Morale

My question concerns contract negotiations in a historical league with no free agency: Will a player refuse to play, or holdout if his contract expires and he does not like what management is offering at the start of the next season?

I'm about 97.638% sure that I read that this will be the same as past seasons, where they automatically get a contract and take it.
