Does anyone take the time to watch/manage your minor league teams?
Just curious, I was thinking of maybe at least watching my minor leagues teams play to try and get a better feel for my prospects, although I know it will slow my game progress down dramatically.
Your thoughts?

I run a minor-league report every 2 weeks of sim and go over stats, make moves, etc. I started off going over boxscores every day, but it slowed me down too much. I still feel as though I have a pretty good grasp of what's happening down there.

I keep quite a close eye on my three minor league teams, it gives me a much better idea about prospects than just relying on scouting reports.I also quite like the "human interest stories"-veterans who get sent down to AAA, prospects who just don't pan out and low draft picks who suddenly start making an impact. However it's taken me over a year to get through five seasons of my deadball era fictional league so I realise that my sedate pace isn't to everyone's taste!

My plan has always been to do a monthly monitor of their stats along with a weekly look at the Minor League 'readiness' report. In addition, I have news set to deliver for My Entire Organization. Whenever I receive an email letting me know about an outstanding performance, there's always a chance after a review of that player that I'll shortlist him for closer observation.

I am managing in the minors right now. It is quite a challenge with the player movement. I took a 3-1 series lead in the title series and wham lost all my players and the series. Sucks they did not let me keep my best pitcher to win the title. I have had a winning record everywhere and have gotten promoted every year, all the movement in the minors is a pain in the ass. I cant wait to get my MAL job offer.

That's precisely why I don't manage in the minors. Managing the high school and college teams is much better...

I play out all my major league team's games; I don't sim at all. I set lineups, depth charts and pitching assignments throughout my organization. I also play with scouts "off."
Every two days I review pitching and lineup/depth chart pages for all my minor league teams, to (a) check for injuries (I wish as GM I got emails about minor league injuries), (b) adjust lineups, depth charts and pitching assignments in light of injuries, (c) find notable talent or ratings changes among minor leaguers, and (d) generally check performance (who's doing well and who's not) so I can consider moving guys up or down as needed. Once a week I check my minor league report to see what my scouts are now saying (checking it against what I think based on players' stats, ratings and ages). Often my scouts tell me a player is "overmatched" but his stats are excellent. I have a guy at AA who is 5-1 with a 1.60 ERA. The scouts tell me he's overmatched but I leave him where he is till stats begin to deteriorate. 3 or 4 times a season I go into Commissioner Mode and manage my AAA team for a game, to get a feel for personalities and player performances. I find this helpful, and it's easy (turn off the box on the game screen that lets the rest of the universe play while you're playing - I don't want my major league team to sim while I manage my AAA club in Commissioner Mode). Even with 5 minor league teams, I have a pretty good idea of what's going on in my organization, especially with my leading prospects. I've never considered simply watching a minor league game, but I might try that now that it's been suggested. |
