In one of my mixed fictional/real leagues I have a starting pitcher beginning to make a splash named Randy Johnson. He's a righty and is 5-5 or something like that. I keep wanting to go in and edit in a nickname for him as 'The Little Unit'.

I have a guy in my dynasty nicknamed The Gay Slapper. He is very good at slapping singles and is very happy to be playing baseball. I do think that there may be another connotation to this or something and for that reason I don't think it should be included in the nickname file. Luckily it is not.

Just because you, personally, may not be offended by it doesn't mean that someone else couldn't reasonably be offended by it. Why should SI invite even a handful of possible customers' misunderstanding when they can prevent that misunderstanding in a way that's simple and won't upset anyone?

If someone is offended by a nickname that can be manually taken out, then maybe this game isn't for them. I'm not trying to thin out the market of those interested in the game, but if someone's offended by that, then maybe their time would be better suited working with organizations such as the ACLU, or the Rainbow Coalition, instead of speaking to SI on what they should do in hopes of avoiding a 'controversy', or playing this game.

Do you feel this way for any nickname, or this one specifically? It sounds as though you're saying no matter what the nickname would be, that's okay because a user can remove it.

This nickname. But any nickname that someone doesn't like, they can get rid of. If someone manually gets rid of that nickname, and still cant get over it, then maybe this game isn't for them

What if the nickname contained a well-known racial slur? Would the problem lie with the user if he decided that deleting it wasn't enough? I'm trying to determine whether you think there is a line that shouldn't be crossed.

I don;t think that this is overly offensive, or meant that way. To me, to be honest, I saw that nick in my game before and never thought of the nick that way. However, I do see the problem with this and should be taken out to suit the people that do have a problem.
I have talked to friends of mine about it, some white some black and none think that this is a big deal. |

Words like Go Tribe mentioned would be unacceptable because they are clear epithets. In this case, because this nickname happens to have a coincidental connection to the KKK, I don't think it warrants removal.

Coincidental? I'm pretty sure the only reason *anybody* nowadays uses the word "grand" before the word "wizard" is because of the KKK connotation. Let's be realistic here. How many people do you see where you say "hey, that guy is a wizard! He owns robes with stars all over them and has a pointy hat and can cast magical spells and most likely has a long, flowing beard!" Now, of that small subset of people, about how many of them can you make the case that they are truly "grand"?
1 a : having more importance than others : FOREMOST b : having higher rank than others bearing the same general designation 2 a : INCLUSIVE, COMPREHENSIVE 3 : CHIEF, PRINCIPAL 4 : large and striking in size, scope, extent, or conception 5 a : LAVISH, SUMPTUOUS b : marked by a regal form and dignity c : fine or imposing in appearance or impression d : LOFTY, SUBLIME 6 a : pretending to social superiority : SUPERCILIOUS b : intended to impress 7 : very good : WONDERFUL Now, of THAT group, how many play baseball? David Wells, MAYBE. |
