Question How do you mass edit managers/coaches?

I would like to "mass edit" managers in my universe. I know you can edit rosters by using the import/export function to text and I have done so. However, managers are not exported when using this function. Managers can be exported into .CSV format but cannot be imported back in this format.

Does anyone have an idea how to edit managers besides using the in-game editor? The in-game editor can be cumbersome and tedious if trying to edit in mass.

Thanks!

No, I don't, but I'm guessing that's a job that would be much easier if the game had a 'mass select' function.

Talking

Contrary to popular belief, I don't actually live on this board. I live in a windowless attic and just vacation here.

Nope, Kemosabe — bagged four of them in the past ninety minutes.

Sorry about that, a.w. - we were kidding Curtis about his valiant (and, I might add, altogether appropriate and deserving of attention) campaign for being able to select players and coaches en masse in order to do the same editing or deleting to all.

To try to answer your question, as apparently no one else has had anything to add so far, I would say that you cannot do what you are describing especially if you have already covered the CSV angle. Those data dump files are for building information databases based on your game, not for editing and re-importation apparently.

But, let's see if anybody else has an idea.

I'm working on coaches at the moment - it's similar to players to a point, it appears that the coach history for managers as well as having the records has the pitching and batting stats...

I can mass edit active players, I just haven't done a mass select function - I code in what filters I want when I'm messing around.

You are talking about developing a utility program that directly edits coaches.dat, correct?

Thanks Yank...I hope someone develops a utility to re-import data dumps back intp OOTP that would be great!

I think that is what our friend redsoxford is working on to bypass, by editing .dat files directly. We'll see. I'm comfortable with CSV files myself and would not mind the approach that you propose.

BTW, nice hat.

The only problem with making the changes in the exported csvs and then re-importing them is that you potentially stand the chance of losing any history associated with the coach.

From my initial look over the data, managers have the history record attached to them, but scouts, doctors, and coaches don't. The other option in this case will be similar to what I did for the stadium importer and that's to create a set of csv files from the dat and use that as the template for re-importing.

The other thing I haven't yet checked out is how the database references itself and which tables if any are the master driving ones.

The reason I wonder that is that each staff member has in its record the current team/organisation/league that they belong to (as well as the last one), but each team record in teams.dat has a list of current staff. If I was to delete a member of staff from coaches.dat but not zero out the corresponding record in the teams.dat file would the game throw a hissy-fit? I suppose the only way I'll find out is to do it.

Yeah, kinda goofy that you can't reimport dumps.

Dump
Edit
Reimport

How hard should that be?

Because the dumps don't contain everything that the database contains you do stand a chance that certain data could go 'missing'.

I'll add a parks.csv reimport feature to my stadium importer. It doesn't use the default dump at the moment as I wanted some way of tying a stadium to a team. If that works (and I can't see any reason why it won't), I'll try it next on the various teams csv's and see if I can accurately recreate all the history and stuff.

Actually, a good thing to think about for 2008 or possibly a future version after that would be a relational database structure not an object database structure.

Well, that's been done, and I've done the re-import of all the team csvs as well and that seems to work fine, teams still have everything they had before after a re-import.

Next up will be the player files.
