Batters with extreme power ratings

After playing around with Groundball % and it's effect on batters, I decided to have a look and see what the unknown rating was in the batting ratings section. It is by default 0 for Overall, Potential, vsLH, and vsRH so I set it to a random positive value for my organisation.

In the first season after the change 7 of my main starting line-up broke the single-season Home Run record (with 2 of them breaking the century mark!)

None of the other ratings were altered so it would have probably been an around .550 team in normal seasons, but we had a 140-22 record!

The team averaged 11 runs per game during that period (and did give up 5.5 as well)

I wonder what the purpose of this field is. In the editor screen, power gets put to 350/350/350 even with this field set to only 1...

Is it a roid-flag?

If you set it 5, do your players get heat vision?

I need help on what sort of power ratings I'd give Spiderman and Superman. Anyone know?

I'm pretty familiar with the csv files, the in-game editor, and the roster import/export process, but I admit I have no idea what field you're referring to. care to clue me in?

When I was writing my various importers, I had to work out what a lot of fields were.

In a player record in players.dat there are four sections to the main batting ratings, Overall, vsRH, vsLH and Potential.

In each of them is a byte for Contact, Gap, Power, UNKNOWN, Eye, AvoidK, HitPitch in that order.

I just set the Unknown byte to 1 and saved my players.dat back and it had this large effect on Home Runs... I just played out a game where I was 14-2 after 7, and won it 22-16 in 10 with if my calculations were correct 7 home runs in the last 3 innings (2 of which were Grand Slams).

This field obviously does have an effect as the batting ratings otherwise aren't that great.

So you're working directly in the hex--which is a little, er, less-than-ethical? I would have guessed it was for BABIP, but if it's affecting HR, that can't be right.

I had to delve in order to write the mods - it'd only be unethical if I used it to cheat, which I don't. And it's not BABIP as that is stored further on in the record due to it being a new rating.

Maybe Power is simply stored as a two-byte value?

Unethical is too strong of a word. But if you're toggling things that the game doesn't let the regular player toggle, then asking what that parameter does is not really fair. If Markus wanted it public, he would have made it so.

Possible. Maybe that's why it runs the Power ratings up to 350 if it's set to "1"

Hmmm...got home and looked at players.dat through a hex editor and don't see any such structure. It's been awhile since I've messed with hex, so maybe I'm just missing something. Anyway, due to my ignorance, I can't help at all.

I can see your point there, but one of the points of being able to mod something is that these things may be found. Markus hasn't published the database structure, so should I have written things like the nations.txt re-importer or the players and teams re-importer because it is fiddling with something that we don't have 'access' to per se.

Due to the fact that the historic ids from Lahman are stored earlier in the record than the batting rating it's not easy to give an easy estimate as to the location of these bytes in the first player.

And I'm not going to publish what I've found about the database structure in totality because it's not public domain.
