explanation please

can anybody explain to me what the numbers and letters mean in short pbp. (ex. single 78ms) now what does that mean?

They are ballfield locations to tell the reader where the ball was hit. I found a good version of a "Batted Ball Field Locations Chart" someplace; I cannot recall where but it's attached in PDF format below.

Also, I have been taking some notes because there are some slight variations from what you see recorded in the OOTP game log to this chart. It's a work in progress, but I'll share what I have so far.

Thanks everyone (esp 1998yankees) that pretty much made sense of all the ones I found confusing (mostly the "R and L" as retrosheet doesnt seem to use these.) Anyway thanks again to everyone who responded.

Thanks. I've already felt compelled to answer again on the OOTP 9 noob board with the same stuff. That, and your post, have inspired me to go back to see if I can add anything to the text file, once I get over my OOTP 9 learning curve. The new flexible field locations may get a sentence or two.
