Do you think any baseball writers play this game?

I listen to ESPN Radio every day almost all day and after listen to guys like Buster Olney, Peter Gammons, Jayson Stark and Tim Kurkjian. I never heard the passion of baseball like I hear from these guys. With the exception of Gammons, due you think anyone plays or has played this game. I here Kurkjian speak and he says he is a 100% stat junkie and I think this game would be right up his alley. Jayson Stark wrote the book the Stark truth where he talked about the most overrated and underrated players at each position in history. Buster Olney I know is also a stat Junkie.

I wonder if either of these three have heard of the game. And I would bet if they where given a setup league they would fall in love with it like all of us.

A number of baseball writers used to play APBA and Strat-O-Matic. I don't think it's as common these days, especially because of fantasy baseball. I have not heard of any baseball writers that play OOTPBB, but it's always a possibility. I doubt it would be anyone on ESPN, though. Those guys are too full of themselves and too busy doing radio, TV, and that rag of a magazine.

The customizablity of OOTP should really sell it to the ESPN guys - finally, they can set up a league that really is just the Red Sox and the Yankees!

I believe legendsport writes for mlb.com. And given all the fantastic dynasty threads he writes here, I think it's safe to say he plays this game.

A Yahoo Sports writer was in our online league, but he reacted very poorly to OOTP 2006. He pulled the plug on involvement after winning several division titles.

Since they are immersed in real baseball, I would think writers would gravitate more toward games that aim to replicate real baseball than ones that concentrate more on fictional baseball worlds. OOTP is not the best tool for pitting classic teams against one another or capturing the feel of using past players. While it can do these things, Strat-O-Matic, Diamond Mind, and others do it better. OOTP is more of a "fictional" game, even in its historical mode.

I slightly disagree. I think OOTP 2007 is the best tool for pitting classic teams against eachother and it's fantastic at capturing the feel of using past players. However, I think that with OOTP, it takes a lot of setup time and tweaking to achieve both and that is enough to deter most the big sports writers from utilizing it as a tool to simulate scenarios for their pieces. That's why they always use games like Diamond Mind and, over the last several years, WhatIfSports.com.

I remember reading a few years back that Curt Schilling was a big fan of Front Page Sports Baseball. He used to pass the time playing it on his laptop when he was on the road.

Schilling still seems to be a big gamer, but from what he says it seems he gravitates towards MMORPGS more than anything.

On a note more cogent to this topic, a few months ago, I know Marc (and I, too) sent an email letting Bill Simmons (the Sports Guy on Page 2 espn.com) know about the game. He's always talking about being the GM of a team.

Why is everybody so down on Joe Morgan? I've heard him do a couple of Mets' games lately on ESPN, and he's okay. Not good, but not bad. Not as good as any of the four current Mets' broadcasters (including Keith's mustache) or Tim McCarver/Bob Costas, but fully as good as Tom Seaver or most other retired ballplayers.

The guy who's REALLY bad is his booth partner. That white guy is turn-off-the-sound-and-turn-on-the-radio bad. He somehow manages to sound surprised on every play, no matter how routine, and he has NOTHING to add to the 'booth banter'. He makes me wish Joe would talk more.

I dislike McCarver as much as I do Morgan. And Morgan's partner actually does radio as his regular job for the Giants. He's tough to listen to as well.
