I'm pretty sure you can only do this within the draft pool. There is a button that says 'import historical player' or something like that. Input their historic ID, which if I remember correctly is the first 5 letters of their last name, the first two of their first name, and then 01 with the path set to Lahman or whatever database you use.

Ex: ruthba01, ripkeca01, aaronhe01, mayswi01

The last two digits are for sorting out duplicates; for example, there are four Bob (or Bobby) Adams in the Lahman database, adamsbo01, adamsbo02, adamsbo03, adamsbo04. They correspond to the four Bob Adams found by searching Baseball Reference:

By the way, you may notice that B-R seems to follow this player name/numbering scheme. That's how I noticed Hank Aaron is actually "aaronha01" in the database; he's listed that way in the address for his B-R page:
