Post Updated News Stories

Community member Eugene Church has gone through and made a number of improvements to the in-game news stories.

You can download an updated copy of the file here.

Installation Instructions
Follow these instructions with OOTP shut down in order to use the new news file:

1. Look for the file english.xml, in the \My Documents\Sports Interactive\OOTP Baseball 2007\data\text folder.

2. Rename this file english.old.

3. Download the new file from above, and unzip it into this same directory.

4. Start up OOTP.

Thanks very much!

Yes, thanks, Eugene.

I loaded new and old files side by side in NoteTab Pro, which counts lines of text. These were the counts noted with word wrapping on and off:

Code:
             Wrap On Wrap Off
New File 39,856 20,374
Old File 39,333 20,230
                ---- ----
Difference 523 144
With word wrapping on (admittedly subjective; depends on full screen resolution), the line count shows the increased amount of verbiage per actual line of text in the file (word wrapping off).

There's definitely an emphasis on quality over quantity here!

battists, thank for updating the Text Database.

I think the community will notice the improvement.

Several categories that were sparse in number of options were expanded. For instance, League Champions only had 5 stories in it. It now has 40 stories.

Batting Title was increased from 5 news stories to 14.

Hall of Fame Induction (Batter) increased from 6 to 10...not much but every little bit help...this category is hard to create if you do it well.

Hall of Fame Induction (Reliever) was increased from 1 story to 10.

Hall of Fame Induction (Starter) was increased from 1 story to 21.

Pitching Triple Crown was increased from 1 to 7.

The Text Database was also proofed and corrections made.

Career stats descriptions were refined and made less wordy.

Headlines (Subjects) were condensed and streamlined to try and make them look like a newspaper headline.

I know it won't please everybody, but I hope most will approve of the changes that were made.

Please post threads on the Discussions Forum and let me know how you think the News Stories can be improved for OOTP9.

Address the thread to me or make it obvious in the thread title you are commenting on the News content in V2007.

Your comments and constructive criticisms would be appreciate.

Thanks very much Eugene! I don't even want to imagine how much work that must have been to go through all of that.

I wonder:

-are all the improvements yours or were there some from others too?
-why are hof hitter stories more difficult than pitching ones?
-are there any batting triple crown stories?

The HOF Induction stories (Batter, Starter, Reliever) are hard to write, if you want them to be authentic and sound like the real inductions. It just take time to find the real induction speeches and edit them down.
MLB only has the speeches from last 5-6 years.

Most of the HOF induction stories in OOTPB are based on real induction speeches.

Writing doesn't come easy to me. I have to write it, then rewrite it multiple times to get the finished product.

I might spend an hour on each one.

The latest Text Updates were my work. I really never stop working on the Text Database. I have been at it for two years now and will continue on the Beta Team for a third time.

I am just starting my own 2007 baseball league. All I have done since March is run tests league to proof the news stories and correct any errors in them. And to expand the categories that need more stories in them.

Basically 2-3 people have done 75% of the Text Database news stories over the past two years. Another 5-10 helped out sporadically.

It is hard, tedious and time-consuming work.

But very worthwhile, when you see the finished product.

It is a joy for me to look at the news stories in V2007 now. It is not perfect, but it is a thousand times better than OOTP6.

Yes, there are 14 triple crown stories for batters, too. We are well-covered in the Triple Crown categories, since they only come around every 20-30 years.

There are 7 for Pitcher Triple Crown.

There are 12 stories for a player that hits .400 or better.

Whenever I can find it, I take the players' actual quotes, when they win an award or set a milestone.

There's hope: The new english.xml file contains 20,415 unwrapped lines (see my post above). I would like to know this officially as well.
