Bought OOTP 2006---Love of OOTP died Worth coming back?
Please direct me to another thread if this is redundant.
I had first gotten OOTP 6 and 6.5--and loved it. Played it all the time---esp the historical games (I'm a historian--I'm trying to avoid grading final exams as I write!). Then I preordered OOTP 2006. I don't know what it was--but I couldn't stand it. It didn't work for me at all. In fact, OOTP fell off my radar and only just popped up with an e-mail sent out today from the company. I haven't even logged on here since a year and a half ago. Have things been substantially fixed since that version? Or, if I hated that version, will I have a similar reaction to this newest version? Should I wait? Thank-you in advance! |

Read the reviews - all of them say how this new version surpasses 2006 by many miles. Try the demo - I was in the same boat - liked version 6 - but 2006 didn't do it - in my opinion this version if far superior

There have been substantially fixes since that version, for the most part the game is very stable now, and a lot of things are back. Would really need to know what things you hated in that version. The game is still simular to 2006; so if for instance you hated being able to have multiple leagues or a set up that you have to make sure you set things up the way you want. The game still takes some planing and a has a few hours learning curve (all though with the new MLB quickstart, you could just jump right in to that and learn that way).
It would be best to just try the demo and deside for yourself. I don't really know what you'd wait for unless Markus completly changes his mind and does some major revisions, I don't see the game's direction changing much over the next few years. You have to accept where the Markus is taking it, stick with 6 untill it no longer works, or hope another company can fill what your looking for.

Thanks for the responses so far. Yes--I will have to look at reviews--but forum posts are usually overwhelming to me in terms of figuring out what I want.
By waiting--I'm guessing if there's a new one on the horizon. As I noted, I've been out of it. My question is totally honest--I'm just curious about whether or not I should be spending the money on it (I know its not much!) but I'm Dutch. Demos usually are hard for me to figure out. (also, I'm getting a new laptop in a few months--will it transfer to a new laptop?) |

2006 killed OOTP for me too. That was an absolute mess. I will never pre-order an OOTP release again after that.
Not had a chance to play much with 8 yet, but what I've seen, I really like. Facegen alone (being the fictional whore that I am) is enough to sell me. |

The demo is exactly like the game, except that you can't play past I think it's August 1st and you can only play for a month in real time.
As long as it's the same type of computer (PC or mac), then yes, you get two licences so you could play on both your old machine and the new laptop. Marckus hasn't said where the game is going yet. He's been pretty silent since returning to his own company.

If you were disappointed by 2006, I honestly don't think you will feel the same about 8. Chances are it will be better than you ever thought 2006 was going to be when you preordered it. Last edited by frosticle : 12-14-2007 at 07:52 PM. |

As others have mentioned, a lot of this will depend on what it was about 2006 that was unattractive to you. OOTP 8 is very similar to 2006 from a visual and interface perspective, but with almost 2 years of refinement. So, there are many easier ways to navigate the interface in OOTP 8 than there were in OOTP 2006. But, that said, it's overall the same interface, so if you completely hated it, then you'll have to overcome that feeling to enjoy OOTP 8. There are certainly customers who wish we would drop this whole interface and return to OOTP 6.5-style. However, that is not going to happen, although we're continually looking for ways to improve the interface without scrapping the whole thing and starting over.
In terms of features, I think the best term to describe OOTP 8 compared to 2006 is "refinement." 2006 was a very "raw" product, the first generation of a new interface, new feature set, new framework. Since then, we have released 2007 and then OOTP 8 (although the two are fairly similar). Much of what 2007 and OOTP 8 accomplished was refining that rough start from 2006. Technically, OOTP 8 is far more stable than 2006 was, as well. Well, those are just a few thoughts from someone "on the inside." I would echo those who urge you to give the demo a try. Even if you're Dutch, learning to play on the demo is no harder than learning to play on the actual game, and if you hate it, you've saved yourself 20 euros! Good luck! Steve |

I thought 2006 once all patched up was fine.
However I think 2007 is a FAR superior game. for my money this is how I rank my OOTP experiences: 1. v2007 2. v6.5 3. v6 4. v4 5. v5 6. v3 7. v2006 (once patched) 8. v2

Had a midget doing his nails between hands, and sent an aspiring supermodel after a hoagie sandwich, but i'm sure he'll get back to coding soon.

I went back to the simplicity of V6.51. I was on the Beta Team for V2006 and V2007 and spent a lot of time running test leagues to proof the news stories. I guess over time I got used to the complexity of the game and the new interface. V2007 is a fine game...and much superior to V6.51. I think you will like it. I do. |

Eugene's comments are very helpful. I my biggest problem with it was complexity---without a sense of payoff for the complexity. Perhaps I was overwhelmed--I truly couldn't nail it down. But Eugene's testimonial sounds convincing that perhaps some of the...."elegance" of 6.5, perhaps...resurfaced in the latest version. This seems to be echoed by some of the others that commented.
I do appreciate the comments b/c its hard to respond to such questions and the temptation is just to say "try it". So, thanks! ![]() |

I wouldn't call it elegant. It does play well enough, though.

There is a big learning curve and it can get frustrating trying to set up league at times. I suggest that you play around with several test leagues before you create the real one. That way you will only mess up test leagues while you are getting familiar with the game. Read the manual at the same time you are setting up your league. You will avoid a few pitfalls that way. Keep in mind there are certain times of the season when the game will not let you adjust options. But once you get familiar with it, I think you will come to appreciate the game like many others have. Last edited by Eugene Church : 12-15-2007 at 03:21 PM. |
