Why Can't He Make Up His Mind?
So I started simming through the first season of a league where I took over an expansion team. I am about half way through the season and I get a message from my utility infielder, who is 38 this season, and he tells me that he would like to stay in Pittsburgh. I am tempted to hand him a contract. He has been very useful and despite his age I think it would be nice to have him back next season. But I decide to wait it out. A month later I get another message saying he will retire at the end of the season. A month after that I get a message saying he wants to stay in Pittsburgh. In the end he retired and I did not resign him.
Has anybody else seen this happen? |

It appears that the module governing willingness to extend is not related to the one controlling retirement plans.
However, having said that, I remember one occasion when a player announced his retirement but I offered him an extension later on anyway. He accepted it and did not retire. So I guess the point is that nothing is guaranteed because players can change their minds, in the game as in real life.

I learned the same thing about contract extensions - some of my players told me they were going to wait until free agency. Then, I checked back later in the year and they were willing to negotiate.

They almost all do by May..if you try to extend at the beginning of the season.

I had a player say that all season. After we won the WS he signed a 1 year deal for higher money than I would have offered for a multi-year deal.

Same here. Every time I've had a similar thing happen, they have retired even if I offered an extension. I haven't even bothered in a while.

I'm pretty sure I remember that accurately. From the other posts here, we can conclude that such things usually happen as announced or indicated, but not always.
