PBP Log

During a game, when you open up the game logs and look at how the play would be written up in a score book ( HR/L9d...E5/g56...34/g3s)...is this info just "eye" candy or does the game engine do a great job of accurately portraying what occurred on the play to enhance immersion?

Dave, I'm not sure what you are asking. The notations mean something, as you can find out by going to this thread.

If you are asking whether the game does a good job of recording batted ball field locations realistically, let's see if others have anything to say about that.

1998 Yankees-

Yes, the accuracy/realistics part. The location on the field, whether it was a ground ball, pop up, fly ball or line drive.

It would be great to know that when my SS throws out a batter deep in the hole (ie. 56d) and I can "see" that his great range factor was taken into effect on the play. Or a deep fly ball (ie. 8xd) in the late innings may be a sign my SP is tiring vs. just a pop up to short CF ( ie. 8s).

I've heard from a beta tester it's just "eye candy". Another poster in another thread brought up the fact that the game engine decides if a ball-in-play is a hit or out *before* determining the location the ball is hit, so the logical conclusion is that the pbp data is simply "faked" from frequency charts for ball types and zones while factoring in pitcher GB% and batter directional tendency after the fact of the resolution of the BIP.

You can tell some of the hit locations are fake with certain odd notations that occur not infrequently. I'll sometimes see a flyball deep into the gap (78XD, 89XD) fall for only a single. Then a blooped ball in front of the centerfielder (flyball, 8L/RS) will fall for a double. I've even seen doubles on ground balls up the middle.

Maybe some who play out every game can share their experience if any strange plays occur that don't correspond to where the ball is put into play.

This corresponds exactly to my experience (I play out the majority of every game for my MLB team plus 2-3 minors teams per day). Seeing-eye grounders go for doubles all the time in the pbp.
