Should I let him qualify to hit .400?
My current 2B is hitting 0.415 as of Sept 10. He has been injured several times this year and just qualified with enough plate appearances to lead the American League.
The team has clinched the division and very likely the best record in the majors, so I don't need his bat. We have a chance to win our 4th consecutive WS (not been done before). He is one of the all time greats, with 7 batting titles, 6 MVP awards and 5 WS. I'm inclined to play him until he gets 502 PA. He rarely goes into slumps so there is little doubt that he'll make it IMO. Any strong opinions either way?

He has at least 453 PA now, no? (Cannot see HBP and SH/SF.) You think he will fall off that badly in only another 50 PA or so? I say go; you and he will feel much better having earned it.

As I said in the OP I will play him until he qualifies. I always sit out most of my starters in the last 2-3 games anyway. I was just interested to know if anyone thought it was kind of a back door way to a batting title.

I don't think there'd be much feeling of an accomplishment (to anyone) if you sat him out safely over .400 anyway so you should go for it. The only thing I would do is be a little more interested in giving him rests late in games well in hand or if he has an injury or is tired. I wouldn't sit him otherwise, except maybe a game or two right before the playoffs to make sure he is well rested, but no more than any other important player. |

I dont rest starters any more. They have the same chance of getting injured in the first playoff game. Plus too much rest might actually hurt their performance.
Besides its a team game so every player should be able to do his job. I do rest a SP if it is needed in order to set up my playoff rotation. |

So you're asking whether to play him beyond that? It's a two-part question; first, whether he bats .400 and second, whether he wins the batting title. At first, I was going to differentiate between the two, but I'll just tell you what I would do and leave it at that. I would never sit anybody down in order for him to achieve either goal because I would remember doing so each time I looked back on it.

OK, he went into the last game hitting 0.401. We were shut out 9-0 only 5 hits...

No, he made it. He went 1 for 2 with 2 walks to finish at .402. Sorry about my lame attempt at suspense.

Holding guys back from a game to get them a percentage-based record of some kind is not unprecedented. IIRC, that's how Alan Anderson got the ERA title in 1988.

I would sit him out of the playoffs, the dude is in a massive slump.
He lowered his average 14 points the past week or so. What is his batting average after the first post. You can figued it out based on the SS shown above and his final season totals. Can we say A-Rod?
