A superstar player not being signed has an obvious enough cause, that being that he's so good that his contract demands are above what any team can afford. However, the game needs to recognize this and make adjustments.

The sign and release issue is something different altogether. I sometimes wonder if it points to a deeper flaw in how the game determines players' value.

Indeed it is. However, it does not include news stories, and makes it impossible to include clauses, as far as I know. It is pretty simple, though.

I wonder if he took a massive ratings hit before he was updated. In the league I was playing a former 20 game winner dropped completely off the map before he was 25. His scouted ratings (and I use scouts) still saw him as a major league calibar player, but his actual ratings and potentials were terrible. Perhaps the AI knows something that you don't.

That's interesting.

It occurred to me to manually edit the guy and make him a decent player again, but I had no idea what his numbers were to begin with, so I just gave up. Heck, maybe the guy got blackballed over spit-tobacco or something.

That would be my first guess, except that within about two years, the game tried to kill three outstanding players without explanation. The guy who kept getting released every other week was the truly weird case.
