Retirement bug? how to unretire

Gerald Laird, in my little world is a premier catcher. I traded for him during Jan 2010. Had a great year with me, then in Mar 2011, ruptured bicep, out for 11 months. So he had a year off and I ended up platooning a few decent catchers and felt good about how cheap they were. So when Geralds contract came due(on Nov 2011) i let it go. He was on my DL for the year, i simply did not renew as he was very expensive.
So now in Jan 2012(he is just recovered), being 32, 5 stars with great numbers all around, he retires.
He was being offered contracts as he noted it when i went to try to lowball him.

I assume this is a bug, and want to unretire him(and fix his stats as it seems they die off when you retire)

Ok, so i found the unretire(wasnt in commish mode at the time).

Is this just a bug? maybe as he hadnt played in almost a year and happened to be without a team?

I believe it is hardcoded that players that sit in the FA pool for more than a year(give or take a month) will retire. This keeps the FA pool from jamming up with a bunch of worthless guys.
