OOTP 9 - Can we "send" guys now?
Along with sound and IRS%, I strongly felt that OOTP 9 needed the ability to "send" or "hold up" runners on a case-by-case basis.
In other words, to try and stretch singles to doubles, etc., on your command, with your decision based upon provided speed and arm ratings of the runner and defender involved, respectively. Baseball for Windows allowed this (as does BM09) and am hoping it appears here. Anyone know for sure if this was added?

Yeah, if I remember right, OOTP did have this at one time. I'd like to see it return as well.

Excuse my ignorance on these matters, but after the batter is out of the box is it really still the manager's word that makes the runners choice to go up more than one base?
I agree out of the box for sure though - I've been burned by a double trying to be stretched into a triple in a late game situation when I would have liked to have told the hitter to stop at second. Last edited by Sdpm100 : 04-25-2008 at 02:40 AM. |

In a game, IRL, the 1st & 3rd base coaches have some input on if the runner should advance or not. They are an extension of the manager.

...there are strategy settings for running aggressiveness, which I presume control how likely they are to send runners and try to get them to take an extra base.

Might be more realistic if you had a game strategy slider, maybe several. So in game you could tell the coach you want to be more aggressive against the CF but less so against the cannon in right... and be able to make that change in the 8th inning if they changed fielders or you need a run badly in a 2 hit game. That would be good, but having the popup box on whether to go or not isn't realistic at all

The 3rd base coach absolutely has a huge say in telling the runner to go home or not. I'd have no problem with the runner occasionally ignoring my command to stay or go home (i.e. Manny), but I think it should at least be an option to choose whether or not to send the runner home.
By the way, having an animated ball-flight path would really help in making that decision ![]() |

Some day I hope we allow the manager in-game to be able to send the sign to the base coach to:
Tell the runner to hold close to the bag. Do not run us out of this inning. Tell the runner to run aggressively.

If we can't send them ourselves, could the Powers That Be at least increase the frequency with which an average runner can score from second with two outs on a single to the outfield? I haven't played a lot of games in OOTP 8, but this was infuriating in 2007.

Send the runner...
I believe sending the runner during the game is important. Just because your team is set to be agressive or not agressive should not matter.
Game 7 of the World Series and you have chance to win or tie the game and your bench is depleted and the pitcher is due up next...I want to send the runner home! Also the Third Base Coach is definitely the extension of the manager. I would love to have this option back! Christian |

To be honest with you, that is one of the "deal breakers" for me. I love to play my games and if I can't tell my slow poke of a base runner to hold up at 3rd, realistic or unrealistic, I don't want to play.
You see, the problem with your reasoning Markus, is that the 3rd base coach is not human, it is just a computer looking at what your slider indicator shows. We all know that that won't work on every situation. Shoot, you would have to have a super micromanage slider that would give you every scenario (down by one, but the runner is slow, then again, I am in the 8th with maybe no more chances to score...etc.). We NEED the HUMAN ELEMENT on that sort of strategy. And, c'mon, this is a computer game! We can "bend" the elements of reality to make the game more "fun". It would be an easy option to turn off, if you don't like it. No base running calls, no purchase of the game. Sirhawk |

but I would like to have the option to send the runner or not. I always found that to be kind of exciting during a game.

![]() Also, I don't think this would contribute to an "arcadey" feel to the game, since it's not based on timing or some sort of physical skill, like having the player swing the bat would be. It's just a judgement call and those are what the entire game is based upon. Hmm. . . Gotta get ball flight, Microleagueesque stick guys running and "send" option in OOTP 10! ![]()

The fact of the matter is, baserunning is something that is very up to the discretion of the player, even with base coaches. Also, baserunning decisions are split second decisions where having the game pause to offer you this option would just be silly. |

To you it may be silly, but to others it is not. The point to playing a "GAME" is to have fun, is it not? Do you play the "GAME" because someone is putting a gun to your head and making you play it? No. So, if the purpose to playing a "GAME" is to have fun, why not have it so those who would like to have this option, can have it turned on so that they can get even more enjoyment from it?
