Win Shares

I like to create my own custom reports for my OOTP league. I simply export the stats every year, open with Excel, play with the numbers a bit, and then import back into Access. From there, I have a number of custom reports already built. For example, I like to create and print out my own "Baseball Encyclopedia". It's fun reading if you're sitting on the ... err, I mean if you're sitting waiting for a bus.

Anyway, I was thinking about adding Win Shares to my reports but I didn't feel like killing myself with all the calculations. So I got to thinking.......

Since the game GIVES us defensive ratings for players, it should be pretty simple to figure defensive Win Shares. In Bill James book, for the short-form method, he gives defensive WS as follows:
Catcher = 1 WS per 24 games
First Base = 1 WS per 76 games
Second base = 1 WS per 28 games
Third base = 1 WS per 38 games
Shortstop = 1 WS per 25 games
Outfield = 1 WS per 48 games

My thinking was that these must be the number of defensive WS for an AVERAGE defensive player at that position. I would assume that would equate to a 100 rating in OOTP. So if I wanted to be a little bit more accurate with my defensive WS's, all I'd have to do is play with some historical WS figures to come up with some kind of factor to calculate dWS for individual players.

For example, given an OOTP shortstop rated as a 100 fielder (ignoring errors and dp rating), he should get 1 dWS for every 225 innings (25 x 9) he plays. The question remains, what factor should I use if that shortstop had an OOTP rating of 200?

I'm going to mess with this over the weekend and see what I can come up with.

Note - I'm not sure why I posted this, just kind of thinking out loud waiting for the release of the new version.

Note 2 - I know all the arguments for and against Win Shares. Frankly, I use my own approach for calculating offensive Win Shares. I take Extrapolated Runs and convert those to "wins". In the end, for me, it's simply a quick and dirty way to come up with interesting lists of players.

I have no clue. I have an access program that will figure win shares as the book figures them, shouldn't be hard for you to export the number from mine and import into your stuff.

At least won't be when OOTP9 goes live and I release the new version. I've done bit of work with it since the one for 2007 was released.
