Firing hilarity

Or not. I've read in other threads how the firing algorithm of GM's basically is flawed, but I've just hit upon one that is just absolutely inexcusable.

I take charge (as the GM) of the Washington Nationals, in my historical universe they are an expansion team in 2005. After starting 5-8, we do have a pretty old roster from the expansion draft picks, so I make a few trades, one for a player unhappy about not being designated as the closer - why he should be unhappy for that reason I don't have any idea, but hey it's not the worst part of it.

So at 12-31 I get the "you've been fired" note. In the first season. With an expansion team. When there is another NL team, the Rockies, also with just 12 wins and their GM doesn't get sacked (nor should he or would he IRL). We have a much higher attendance average than Colorado, and have the second lowest payroll, basically because there is no-one in the free agent pool of use, nor do we have any players to trade out. So how would I be expected to make a change in such a short space of time?

The owner's expectations are also totally flawed. The note said to stay near .500 in the first season. Whilst they might say that in public, I'm pretty certain most, if not all, ownership groups wouldn't care about the record in year 1.

Simply put, this looks to me to be yet another good idea on paper that proves not to be when in the game.

Maybe you have a complete idiot as an owner. The odds are that an expansion manager would never get fired in the first year. There probably is an issue but maybe the dice came up snake eyes for you.

I don't know myself, but it seems that most firings are towards the end of the season. And certainly not after 43 games with an expansion team.

True. It's a shame I can't see the owner's traits.

If there was off-field issues I could just about see it happening in that short a time. But the game doesn't have those.

Actually, I've investigated and the simulated you was having serious off field issues... drunk driving charges 2 days before you were fired... assault charges are pending against you for some kind of strange happening in a night club just 5 days before (details weren't avilable)... and one of your players filed sexual harrassment charges against you with the front office just 3 weeks ago.

The simulated you should really mind its Ps and Qs in your next job.

The Colorado GM, on the other hand, was seen in church every Sunday since he started, 2 weeks ago a picture in the paper when he helped an old lady across the street, and just 3 days ago he was praised for rescuing a cat from a tree.... if only the simulated you were half of that man!

Thanks for correcting me on that then, and also revealing the info too.

I don't think the game will be giving me another job opportunity with a 12-31 record anyway.

I dunno... in one testing league I racked up a 250 million payroll on a 120 million budget, went 60-102 for the season, and had -500 million cash on hand when I got fired... I was offered a job by 3 major league teams.

If I can be that incompetent and still be offered a job, there's a chance for you.

No one gave Tony Perez another shot, either.

Still better than some of the Royal GMs of late.

Firing hilarity? Isn't this what the writers of "According to Jim" have been doing for years?

Well, at the end of the season I did in fact get offered the position of GM with the Yankees (74-88), Cardinals (80-82), and the Cubs (74-88). The Nationals finished at 63-99.
One thing that made me smile was in the email from the Yankees, it said that they were "impressed with my resume". Clearly it was not a resume of my major league career at the position.

Hey, anyone would be impressed with that list of off-field problems you had. Just most people wouldn't have put them on their resume.

I guess they must have felt sorry for me or something. Or were desperate.

That's what you tell someone right before "but we went in another direction."

Its funny that the Yankees and Cubs wanted you. Of course they would want someone who can`t run a team.
