I'm not Canadian, but I've done a considerable amount of research on Canadian population demographics and economic trends for my business persona.

Certainly southwestern Ontario and the Golden Horseshoe area of southern Ontario are huge population centers. Extending northeast from there, you have Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City, and then there a couple of cities in the Atlantic provinces that are sizable.

Southern British Columbia is also a large population center, but more recently Alberta has experienced explosive population and economic growth. There is some similar growth that is ramping up in southern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba. So, while some of the metropolitan areas are still small by American standards, the rapid growth is leading to a redistribution of population in Canada, and it has put places like Edmonton and Calgary among the top locations for business development.

For a modestly sized baseball league, I think the following cities would make sense. Stats Canada lists all of these metropolitan areas as having 200,000 or more citizens. This would give a league 18 teams. I've included nicknames which are largely based on local history or characteristics.

Vancouver Islanders
Edmonton Trappers
Calgary Wranglers
Regina Royals
Saskatoon Rebels
Winnipeg Warriors
Windsor Ambassadors
London Lancers
Kitchener Marshals
Hamilton Steelhawks
Toronto Narrows
Ottawa Nationals
St. Catharines Saints
Montreal Monarques
Quebec Harfangs
Nova Scotia Navigators (Halifax)
Victoria Songhees
Oshawa Voyagers

Some good names there! A few I use as well. I'll have to do some research on most of the Ontario ones unless you want to quickly explain them. The ones I get off the bat:
  • Songhees for Victoria after the Native tribe there. I usually go for Royals or Monarchs for them as it is a pretty old British city. North Victoria, or north of Victoria I'm not sure which, is actually called Salish which the Songhees are.
  • Navigators for Halifax after their seafaring, but I use Navigators for my Nanaimo team and Navalists for Halifax.
  • Nationals for the capital Ottawa, obviously, which I often use as well.
  • Winnipeg Warriors for their history of native fighters, which I've used, but also lengthen it to Metis Warriors.
  • Steelhawks for Hamilton as its our steel city, but I just use Steelers as it also fits with base stealers. Stealhawks are definitely interesting though.
  • Wranglers for Calgary's ranching industry, funny because I just recently switched to that name for them never having even thought of it before.
  • Trappers for fur trapping, but I didn't know Edmonton was famous for that (maybe they are, I don't know). I usually call my Kamloops team the Fur Traders. I can't escape something to do with oil for Edmonton.
  • Royals for Regina as it has some royal beginnings of some sort, but I like to go for Bisons myself as they're known for that as well.
  • Rebels is a good name for a prairie team as there was a lot of rebel fighting back in the day, but aren't the Saskatoon Rebels a biker gang? To keep a green team in Saskatchewan I have to always go agricultural like the Harvesters.
  • Islanders for Vancouver is about the only one I disagree with using because Vancouver and Vancouver Island are completely separate and are actually pretty different culturally. You also already have Victoria. I've used lots for Vancouver with the usual being something to do with forestry like Lumberjacks or Timberjacks and Johnny Canuck as the logo/mascot.

Seeing as how some people in the future might look for some Canadian league ideas I'll list some league configurations and names I've gone with (I welcome criticism):

I have lots more with just configurations even anyone ever wants the file.

I'd also love to see more names that others use for their Canadian teams.

Other names I have used:

Saskatoon Wheat Kings
Regina Rattlers

Victoria Capitals
Kelowna Mountaineers
Vernon Grizzlies
Calgary Redbirds
Edmonton Bisons (sorry I get tired of oil names for Alberta teams)
London Monarchs
Kingston Frontenacs
Mississauga Royals
Windsor Aces
North York Metros (would make sense for a league starting in the 90s or before)

I deally I would see a Canadian league being composed of four distict leagues: Western Canada, Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes. Each league would crown a champion that would then participate in a round robin tournament in August for the Canadian championship.

I always called my championship the Pearson Cup which was the name of the exhibition between the Jays and Expos for years until it was discontinued.

Let's bring a little peace, order, and good government to this thread, and identify possible team names for the aforementioned cities for this league.

Heck, if you're nice, I'll send the files to battists and maybe we'll get a new screenshot or two.

Thanks!

I'll offer "Peterborough Power" (Peterborough was one of the first places in the country to begin generating hydro electrical power (even before the plants at Niagara Falls).

Though it's not a very 50's -ish name...

Halifax Navalists? Ugh

I grew up in Halifax, and that just doesn't fit. I've also been in the navy for 29 years.

The one I always use is Kingfishers, since that is the centre of the Coat of Arms. Makes for a nice logo too.

The Canadian league should probably have all beer names. How about the Halifax Alexander Keiths...Guelph Sleemans...Vancouver Kokanees...

I like it - Kingfishers is a must. Lived in Dartmouth for a few years and loved the Halifax/Dartmouth/Cole Harbour area.

Just for the record: I thought you were just trying to bring attention to your original thread with this thread. I didn't see a problem in steering this thread into a more useful direction, which would hopefully also bring even more attention to your thread, but you started it so I'll respect your wishes.

I recommend 'Steelers' for Hamilton. Nice and traditional.

'Hammers' would be good too, as the city's often refered to as 'The Hammer'.

Alexander Keiths is owned by Olands which is owned by Labatts.

There is/were a couple of teams in Halifax/Dartmouth named after breweries.

Dartmouth Moosehead Dry (Baseball - 5 time defending champions, have won 12 of last 15 championships)

Halifax Oland Exports (Hockey - relocated)

That's a great idea but for the copyright issues.

Hamilton is to Canada what Pittsburgh is to the US - Steeltown.
