Pinches Batting around

Was umming and ahhing whether to put this in Talk Sports (or FOF), but thought more people read in here.

If a player comes into a game as a Pinch Hitter or a Pinch Runner and the team bat around what is that player termed as when he comes for his at-bat?

Is a Pinch Hitter still a Pinch Hitter the second time round and is a Pinch Runner still a Pinch Runner or a Pinch Hitter?

Hmmm. Not sure about the runner, but the pinch hitter is a pinch hitter unless and until he assumes a position in the field, at which point he becomes that position. You see this in the box score. If the PH takes a position in the field, say 1B, then the box score will list him as "PH-1B". It's not often that you see a PR get to the plate, so I'm not sure if the PR becomes a PH or what. My guess is that is what would happen. "PR-PH".

It would be interesting to see if "batting stats as a pinch runner".

OOTP does, it's just hidden...

I'm sure there are ways of getting it out of the database that don't involve deciphering it, but for every league the game does store batting stats by position and there is a stat for pinch runner.

In a test ML season, PR managed to get 3 AB with 2 doubles and a strikeout. It's a shame it's so hard to find the games in which these happened.

There's an interesting article on BB Ref about this very thing.

Looking up the most recent one, in the news article it says this.

Durrington scored the tying run on Damian Miller's first triple in two years, and Miller then scored the game-winning run on Brady Clark's single up the middle. Carlos Lee and Jenkins added RBIs as the Brewers built a three-run lead and Durrington's spot in the batting order came up. According to official scorer Tim O'Driscoll, Durrington struck out to end the inning not as a pinch-hitter or a pitcher or a position player, but as a pinch-runner.
The Official Site of The Milwaukee Brewers: News: Milwaukee Brewers News

The box score also just lists Durrington as a "PR".

You know you're having a bad day when you strike out as a pinch runner.

Unless things have changed in the last 20 years or so, officially that player would go from pinch-hitter (or pinch-runner) to "substitute," although I've certainly never seen anything in a boxscore like "PH-Sub."

This being the case, a pinch-runner batting later in the inning is not batting as a pinch-hitter; and a pinch-hitter batting for the second time in an inning is not batting as a pinch-hitter the second time.

Probably this is pretty obscure because as far as I know, there aren't any records kept for "substitutes."

Depends on what you did as the runner. You know, your team is having a good day though (or at least inning)
