Injury decisions...
Perhaps this has been discussed before- but I was thinking about some different injury permutations that would really add to the immersion level of the game (at least to me).
Imagine as part of the injury engine in the game- you, as the GM- would be given the option to either allow your star third baseman to play through a small shoulder tear (at, say, 80% effectiveness)- and absorb a small risk to further injury- or decide to choose surgery which would put him on the shelf for 8-12 weeks, but bring him back at 100%. I know OOPT currently has injuries that a player can play through at a limited capacity- but it would be nice, as the GM, to to be given alternatives and make these decisions depending on where your team is in the standings, player age, contract terms, etc. I wouldn't want it to be the case with every injury- just a small percentage where elective surgery/downtime make sense. You could even make the percentages editable to suit people's taste (If only just in the form of editing the injuries.txt file). Last edited by NomarHits400 : 06-13-2008 at 03:01 PM. Football Manager / Worldwide Soccer Manager (FM/WSM) has this type of option. Essentially your trainer emails you with two choices and you pick which course to take.

There are plenty of examples irl where players go on the 60 day DL for lengthy injuries, and 15 day DL for injuries that are severe enough to keep them out that long.

I'm experimenting with something now. Not sure it will make the cut, but even if not - if it has a desirable effect, I will release it to the hounds after releasage.
I understand what you're getting at, but not sure if what I'm trying will accomplish all that. I do think, however, it will accomplish something.... different than the ordinary. Let's leave it at that. |

I think it would be an interesting challenge to play using the DL rules that used to exist in MLB. If you were a GM in 1955, for example, the short-term DL stay lasted a minimum of 30 days and you could only have two players on the DL at any given time. As if that weren't enough, there was no long-term 60-day DL (that rule wasn't put into place until 1960).
Basically, if you had a player who was going to be out of action for awhile, or you incurred a third injury, you'd have to choose between effectively playing a man short until the player healed, or releasing the player and bringing in someone else. That's a very different scenario than GMs face today...

You know what - I prefer that! If you think about it, that setup really rewards a team that has depth. Truly the better overall team escapes the meat grinder of the season under that rules setup.
Very interesting. |

There also aren't any situations where, for instance, you can choose whether to have a player have serious surgery in July and maybe be ready in time for next season if you're 10 games out in July or for him to stay playing for you at, say, a 10% reduction in talent during your pennant run and then have it in the off-season, when maybe they won't get back until July, which is what I believe people are asking about. Yes..That is correct. In its current iteration the game does not allow you to do what I have said for longer term injuries- I understand it is there for short term injuries- and I am well aware of how the MLB DL functions. |
