Safe to give away license ID?
Someone I know online is interested in ootp but wants to give it a try first. He offered to buy my 2007 license for $5 or 10 bucks but I figured I'd just give it to him for free since I have no need for it anymore. My only concern is, is it safe to give away the ID? Can they use it to find out any info from viatech?

You should ask elicense.
You might want to keep in mind though that your end user license agreement says you agree to not giving your license to anyone (see 3e of license.txt).

I didn't want to start an argument here. I wasn't aware of the license agreement thing, but now I am. So it's up to me whether I follow it or not. So there's no reason to turn this into a debate

License agreements say a lot of stuff and some of it isn't practical at all. Sometimes, they aren't even legal. Basically, what you guys are saying is that someone couldn't buy OOTP and then give it away as a gift. That's stupid.
I don't see how OOTP can prevent someone from giving a product away that they legally obtained and paid for. It seems stupid to me if OOTP were to ever try and enforce that. What about the crowd that plays the game and is too young to purchase it? Maybe they give a friend cash and then their friend, who's 18 and has a credit card, buys it for them. Are they not allowed to transfer the Order ID to the person who actually paid for the game? You guys worry about some of the most inane stuff ever. OOTP's license agreement may say that but they'll never enforce it. They'd lose sales, ultimately, by doing it. Because I've purchased licenses for people before (in the same scenarios I just listed) and basically, what you're telling me is that what I did was "wrong." Heh, I'm sure Markus really cared about how wrong I was when he was counting up all those greenbacks. ![]()

I don't want to get into this too much as I personally (I'm not talking for OOTP here, just myself) don't really care if someone wants to sell or give away their license, but you don't have to agree to the license and you don't have to agree to buy it. If you don't like the terms of the agreement then don't buy it. It's pretty simple really and totally up to you. If you want to go back on your word and risk whatever the penalty might be then that's on you.
It's like a contract for anything. You want to buy or rent a house or a car? You have to agree to the terms of a contract. You don't like the terms presented to you then don't get it. I think a lot of people don't really understand what a license really means. You don't own the game when you buy a license. Markus and co. own the game. You've only bought the right to use it under the terms of the agreement. Maybe think of it like a lease. If you sign a lease do you now own that car or house? Of course not. Heck, you might not even be allowed to do certain things to it like paint it or alter it in some other way. You might not even be allowed to sub-lease it. You get to use it according to the terms of the contract and that's all. Anyway, it's up to you, but if you think a license or a lease or whatever kind of similar contract entitles you to do whatever you want once you've paid for it regardless of what the agreement says then you couldn't be more wrong. And by the way, when do you have to agree to the license? I'm pretty sure it's after you paid for it, but before you play it, so I really don't see any problem with buying it for someone else and then if they agree to the license only they get to make use of it. Maybe there's something in there about that too, but I doubt it.

I'm usually a law-and-order-type guy, but I cannot see any harm in giving away a license to a game, especially if it is to a prior version that is unlikely to be sold much any more. For that is the only reason it's in the agreement that I can figure: OOTP wants to sell more games.
Reasonable, but unreasonable to actually fear repercussions about. One exception that I can come up with, however, is the possibility of the recipient needing licensing help and not being the purchaser of record.

As long as he unlicenses it and gives him both licenses, I don't see a problem with it.
And in this matter, I certainly don't speak with the voice of OOTPD. I'm just stating my opinion. Markus or Andreas might have an entirely different take on it.

The ones that are demos are usually setups that you can unlock with the key that you get from a purchased license.
